‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard Says Emotional Finale Is Like ‘The Lord of the Rings’
Jan 28, 2025
Finn Wolfhard, a.k.a. Mike Wheeler in Netflix’s Stranger Things, has shared some details about the emotional experience of making the show’s final season. Production recently wrapped on the last episodes of the series, where Wolfhard has built some pretty good memories: “It was incredibly emotional, obviously.”
Wolfhard is currently promoting his latest movie, The Legend of Ochi, at the Sundance Film Festival. While speaking with Variety, he had some time to address the production of the Stranger Things finale, which still has no release date:
“It was incredibly emotional, obviously. It’s the last 10 years of my life. Also for the creators, the Duffer Bros. started when they were 30 and now they are 40. Everyone had a long journey and shared it together. My whole childhood was there. It was sort of the Toy Story 3 moment of leaving your toys behind. It was really special.”

Stranger Things has many references to other pop culture elements, but these are the Stephen King nods you may have missed.
Wolfhard also shared his excitement about ending what was surely a busy period in which he had to finish making Stranger Things while filming a couple of other notable projects. Last year he starred in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Saturday Night, but none had production schedules as busy as the Netflix series:
“We had a long last year. We shot sort of Lord of the Rings style with a year-long shoot. It was a great way to go out and very intense. I feel like it couldn’t have ended better. The Legend of Ochi is the first movie that I’m promoting since, so it feels like post-graduation or something. I am excited for everything to come out.”
The actor is set to play Mike one last time in the highly anticipated finale of Stranger Things, one of Netflix’s signature shows. Before the fantasy horror series, Wolfhard had minor roles in shows like The 100 and Supernatural, but being cast in the Netflix original was a game changer. Originally released in 2016, Stranger Things quickly became a cultural phenomenon that struck a nostalgic chord for fans who either lived through or are fond of the ’80s. It’s safe to say that the show is one of the most important TV series ever made.
‘Stranger Things’ Season 5: What We Know So Far
There’s no official release date yet, even though some fans have gone deep inside the internet to try and figure out Netflix’s schedule. All we know is that 2025 will see the release of the series finale, but during the first quarter, the streamer will give Squid Game Season 3 and Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 some breathing room. 2025 is the year that Netflix sees the end of three of its major TV shows.
The series finale of Stranger Things will consist of eight episodes, and apparently, each one will have the running time of a feature film (or two). It’s also a mystery as to whether Netflix will release one episode each week or if the ending will be split into two parts.
What we do know so far is that every single important character from previous seasons will return – that is, if they haven’t died. Season 5 will also feature new characters, including one played by Terminator icon Linda Hamilton. The rest is still a mystery, but we are just dying to know if the final season will bring back Eddie Munson, even for just a quick appearance in the Upside Down.
