‘Suicide Squad’ Star Jai Courtney Talks DC Return in James Gunn’s Reboot Universe

May 30, 2025

Suicide Squad and DCEU star Jai Courtney has expressed interest in a potential return as the fan-favorite supervillain Captain Boomerang in James Gunn’s rebooted DCU. While he’s not sure if it will ever really happen, Courtney declared in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb’s own George Edelman that “of course” he would “be there.” Following the deeply divisive DCEU, for which the equally divisive Zack Snyder was the figurehead, the world of DC is all set to be rebooted by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, beginning with this year’s Superman. Jai Courtney was introduced as the villainous Captain Boomerang in 2016’s Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, and quickly stole the show as the sleazy thief who uses deadly boomerangs to cut through his enemies.

In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Jai Courtney teases his and Alan Ritchson’s high-concept sci-fi action movie.

Courtney later returned to the role in James Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad in 2021, and while Boomerang was killed in the sequel, the canon from the DCEU to the DCU is somewhat malleable. But would Courtney be interested in a comeback? Well, while he doesn’t think it’s likely, he’s very much on board with the idea.
“I mean, I don’t really think about it. But you know, it’s um, it’s one of those things, man, those, you know, those big creative decisions get made by people much smarter than I. If that was ever something to happen, of course, of course, I’d be there. But yeah, I don’t, I don’t think there’s any plans to see him anytime soon.”

Jai Courtney Has Discussed His DCU Future With James Gunn

Warner Bros.

While there may be nothing planned right now, Jai Courtney has previously revealed that he has discussed the future of Captain Boomerang with DC Studios co-chief James Gunn himself. “I was like, ‘Come on, man. Boomerang is cool, and James is like, ‘You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ So I have hope,” he said. “Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.” Jai Courtney is currently keeping his villainous persona sharp with the horror movie Dangerous Animals, which recently debuted to rave reviews at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones, The Devil’s Candy), and starring Hassie Harrison alongside Courtney, Dangerous Animals made a splash with critics and now boasts a rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dangerous Animals was picked up for U.S. distribution by IFC Films and Shudder back in February and is due to land in theaters on June 6, 2025. You can check out the official synopsis below.
“When Zephyr, a rebellious surfer, is abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer and held captive on his boat, she must figure out how to escape before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below.”
