Summary
Reports reveal front-runners for Supergirl role include Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly. James Gunn is involved in the selection process, with Supergirl expected to debut via a cameo in another DC project. The DCU reboot will be based on writer Tom King’s 2022 comic book arc Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Reports have emerged revealing the front-runners for the role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. Coming courtesy of Deadline, the actors in line for the title role include House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, CODA star Emilia Jones, and Zombies star Meg Donnelly. The DCU Supergirl movie will be based on writer Tom King’s 2022 comic book arc Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with the actors now reportedly undergoing screen tests.
“There is a chance the studio could make a straight offer to a star, but all things are pointing toward screen tests for actresses, which will go down within the next month or so, we hear.”
The report continues, stating that James Gunn is “definitely part of the process,” with Supergirl likely to make her debut “via a cameo in a DC project that isn’t Supergirl.” This, of course, means that The Flash star Sasha Calle will no longer play the character, which will no doubt leave some DC fans disappointed.
So, who are these three frontrunners being eyed for the role of Supergirl? Milly Alcock recently shot into the limelight thanks to her role as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Games of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon.
Emilia Jones, meanwhile, is known for her roles in the Academy Award winner CODA, the Netflix series Locke & Key, the mystery thriller Brimstone, and High-Rise alongside Tom Hiddleston.
Lastly, Meg Donnelly has starred in the Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise, the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, and already has experience with DC and Supergirl, voicing the character in the animated movies Legion of Superheroes and in this year’s Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.
Any one of them could arguably suit the role of Supergirl in the DCU, but who would you most like to see don the red cape?

The DCU Will Start With Superman: Legacy in 2025
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s comic book, which sees Kara Zor-El finding a new purpose in her life when she is called into action by an alien girl who seeks her out to help her take revenge on the bad guys who destroyed her world. Gunn has teased the DCU iteration of Supergirl, teasing the differences between Kara and her famous cousin, Superman.
“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
The DCU will begin with Superman: Legacy, which is now due to begin filming in March. The Superman reboot will tell “the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and is due for release on July 11, 2025.
