Taika Waititi Reportedly Developing Multiple Disney Projects Including Marvel and Star Wars — GeekTyrant
Apr 30, 2026
It looks like Taika Waititi isn’t done playing in the Disney sandbox anytime soon. A new report is making the rounds claiming the filmmaker is juggling several projects with The Walt Disney Company, including entries tied to both Marvel and Star Wars. According to recent reports, Waititi could be involved in as many as three films currently in development with the studio. That includes one project connected to Marvel Studios and another set in the Star Wars universe. On top of that, there’s talk of a third mystery project that doesn’t tie into either of those major franchises. The latest scoop comes from insider MyTimeToShineHello, who shared the following on X: “Taika Waititi is in talks to write and direct a major IP film for The Walt Disney Company—not related to Marvel or Star Wars (he’s already doing one of each). And if you find out what it is… you might not be too happy.”That last bit is definitely intresting, even if it’s all still unverified. It does raise the question of what kind of IP Disney might be handing over to Waititi next.Waititi has already built a solid working relationship with Disney over the years. He directed Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, both of which leaned hard into his offbeat comedic style. Love it or hate it, his take on Thor completely reshaped the character’s tone in the MCU.The filmmaker previously confirmed that he’s not directing another Thor movie, so it will be interesting to see what other Marvel property he is working on. As for Star Wars, he’s been working on that project for years, and fans wonder if it’s actually ever going to happen. More recently, in November 2025, he teamed up with Disney for the holiday short Best Christmas Ever. The story follows a young girl whose drawing comes to life on Christmas Day. It’s a smaller, more heartfelt project compared to his blockbuster work, but still very much in his creative wheelhouse.Talking about that short, Waititi explained: “What makes this story uniquely Disney is the fact that it’s set in the world of a kid. It’s a kid and her new best friend, navigating the complex world together, and doing it just with the power of friendship and imagination (via The Hollywood Reporter).”Outside of Disney, Waititi’s career has been all over the map. He’s behind the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit and the cult favorite What We Do in the Shadows, showing he can jump between absurd comedy and emotional storytelling without missing a beat.If this report holds up, it sounds like Disney is more than happy to keep him in the mix across multiple corners of its empire. Whether fans are on board with that probably depends on which project ends up being that mysterious third film. Either way, it seems like Waititi isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
