‘The Acolyte’ Creator Details Darth Plagueis Plans for Scrapped Season 2
Oct 29, 2025
A new book has revealed exactly what would have happened if The Acolyte had progressed beyond its first season. The divisive Star Wars series was canceled after only one season on Disney+ due to a combination of high production costs and low viewership, but showrunner Leslye Headland had already plotted out how the storylines and character arcs would have evolved over future episodes. It turns out viewers would have witnessed Manny Jacinto’s Qimir (aka The Stranger) become the first Ren, while a fan-favorite villain stepped out of the shadows for some long-awaited screen time following their exciting cameo in the finale. The Acolyte ended on several major cliffhangers and left some mysteries hanging in the balance, including Osha’s embrace of the dark side, the tease of Darth Plagueis and High Republic Yoda, as well as some unresolved political fallout, but the show came to an abrupt end after only eight episodes. Now, a new book, titled The Art of The Acolyte, reveals how some of these threads would have been picked up if the show had received a second season renewal. According to a post on X/Twitter, Headland confirmed that she had plans for Qimir to become the first Knight of Ren (the Sith crew that Kylo Ren eventually takes leadership of):
“It was in the design of the character, as well as knowing that we were going to introduce Darth Plagueis, who has to end up with Palpatine as his apprentice. Following the Rule of Two — a precept that limited the Sith to just two at any given time, a master and an apprentice — one way to keep it going it is if the Stranger is the first Knight of Ren, part of a Sith-adjacent cult that we know eventually survives.”
The Knights of Ren were first introduced on screen in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, and they also featured in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, but neither of those films delved into the group’s origins or their role within the galaxy. A number of Star Wars books and comics have expanded on the mysterious cult, so it wouldn’t be too surprising for their story to get a similar expansion in live-action. In fact, it became one of the most popular fan theories during The Acolyte, as there were a few clues sprinkled throughout the series that this is where it was heading, with the most obvious being a musical nod to Kylo Ren himself, but it all amounted to nothing, as the story didn’t get to continue beyond its divisive first season.
Was ‘The Acolyte’ Canceled Too Soon?

Even though The Acolyte was originally marketed as a multi-season show, Disney stated that it did not meet the required performance metrics for a second season. Not only did the series receive low viewership compared to other Star Wars shows, it also became the target of an aggressive review-bombing ploy, which resulted in there being a significant gap between its critics score (79%) and its audience approval rating (19%) on Rotten Tomatoes. However, some fans believe that the show was canceled prematurely and deserved more time to flesh out its unresolved plot threads, leading to petitions and social media campaigns. One year after The Acolyte premiered its first two episodes on Disney+, a loyal group of fans relaunched a social media campaign for Headland to be granted a second season renewal to continue the story. As a result, the show started trending on X/Twitter as people used the hashtag to voice their support for the movement and drum up demand for it to make a return. However, Disney has yet to answer the call and for now, at least, any plans for a second season remain on the scrapheap for any opportunistic Jawas.
