The Acolyte’s First Anniversary Sparks Season 2 Fan Campaign
Jun 5, 2025
It is exactly one year since The Acolyte premiered its first two episodes on Disney+, but fans are proving that the force is still strong with the streaming series. Viewers of the divisive Star Wars project have celebrated the show’s special anniversary by relaunching a social media campaign for Leslye Headland to be granted a Season 2 renewal to continue the story. As a result, The Acolyte started trending on X/Twitter as people used the hashtag to voice their support and drum up demand for the series to expand beyond its initial eight-episode run. The Acolyte debuted its first two episodes on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with the remaining six episodes released weekly through July 16. However, the series was canceled shortly after the finale following disappointing audience reviews and dwindling viewership in the latter half of the season. The Star Wars project also had a reported budget of $180 million, which was far exceeded by the time it reached post-production. Lucasfilm therefore opted not to push forward with a second season, much to the disappointment of the show’s loyal fans.

Canceling The Acolyte Shows Disney Is Making the Same Mistakes With Star Wars
The cancelation of The Acolyte continues a frustrating trend of Star Wars’ fear of new ideas.
The Acolyte, which was originally marketed as a multi-season show, follows a former Padawan who reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes but discovers the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated. The final episode brought with it shocking revelations while also leaving behind some significant cliffhangers and unsolved plot threads, having teased the arrival of Darth Plagueis and set up a new alliance between Amandla Stenberg’s Osha and Manny Jacinto’s Qimir. The ending prompted fans to advocate for a second season, with many using the hashtag #RenewTheAcolyte to call for the show’s return in a similar fashion to the posts that have surfaced online today:
What’s Next for Lucasfilm?
Disney+
Lucasfilm is currently focused on bringing The Mandalorian & Grogu to the big screen. The film, directed by Jon Favreau and co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni, is set to be released on May 22, 2026, ushering in a new slate of Star Wars films, including projects helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Simon Kinberg, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing Ahsoka Season 2. The next theatrical film to go into production will be Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, which takes place approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker with Ryan Gosling in the lead role. On the whole, Lucasfilm appears to be pivoting back to theatrical releases after a period of prioritizing streaming content, but with a galaxy so vast, Star Wars is likely to still have a space on the small screen. It remains to be seen whether fan demand for The Acolyte could result in another season in the future, but according to a recent report from Parrot Analytics, calls for the show’s continuation are “20.8 times the average,” which they say “indicates a high loyalty and engagement level from a dedicated audience” and “stands as a compelling candidate for further investment and development.” So watch this space.
