The Devil’s Bath – Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala Interview

Jun 22, 2024

MovieWeb’s Greg Archer spoke with the great Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge) about their new historical horror drama, The Devil’s Bath.

In 1750 Austria, a deeply religious woman named Agnes has just married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day, she is increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path leading to evil thoughts, until the possibility of committing a shocking act of violence seems like the only way out of her inner prison. Giving a voice to the invisible and unheard women of the rural past; The Devil’s Bath is based on historical court records about a shocking, hitherto unexplored chapter of European history.

The film celebrated its world premiere earlier this year at Berlinale 2024 where it won a Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for Martin Gschlacht’s cinematography. The film also recently garnered eleven nominations for the 2024 Austrian Film Awards including Best Film. THE DEVIL’S BATH will open at IFC Center in New York on Friday, June 21st and will arrive on Shudder starting Friday, June 28, 2024.
