The Inbetweeners Star Joe Thomas Hints at Possible Third Movie
Aug 30, 2024
They’re awkward, they’re all grown up, and they’re heading to Vegas. Joe Thomas, who plays Simon in the acclaimed British sitcom The Inbetweeners, has revealed a potential third movie could be in the works, taking the awkward British friends to Sin City. First airing on Channel 4 in 2008, The Inbetweeners followed four unlikely friends as they navigated the highs and low of Sixth Form education (the U.K. equivalent of 12th grade). Starring Simon Bird, Blake Harrison, and James Buckley, alongside Thomas, the series is a comedy staple that still enjoys repeat re-watches from fans.
The series, which ran for three seasons, was turned into a feature film in 2011 and followed the friends on a chaotic vacation to Crete. The first movie was a reasonable box office success, leading to the production of a sequel, which shipped the friends off to Australia.
Fans assumed that The Inbetweeners 2 was the last we would ever see of the awkward group, but Joe Thomas has now given fans an unexpected bit of good news about a potential third installment. Speaking on the Always Be Comedy podcast, the actor revealed that all four of the show’s stars still keep in touch, and have been discussing re-uniting for a third film. While the first two movies saw the friends jet off around the world, the third film could take them to the notorious party capital, Las Vegas. Thomas revealed:
“We’re all still around, we’re all still in each other’s lives. We all still like each other. And if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it. A movie, I think, works with the right idea. It would be challenging to do another series, just because of the timeline. But with the film, there are all sorts of options.”
Joe Thomas Explains Why a New Series of The Inbetweeners Wouldn’t Work
Like any good British sitcom, The Inbetweeners received an American remake in 2012. Running for one season on MTV before its cancelation, the adaptation attempted to replicate many of the jokes from the original, but completely misunderstood what made them so funny in the first place. While fans are excited at the prospect of a new Inbetweeners movie, there have been some who have been desperately calling for the original show’s revival since it went off the air in 2010.
However, a series reboot/revival is unlikely, considering how much the actors and their respective characters have grown up since. Though Neil likely still sticks Lego where Lego should not be stuck. During the conversation, Thomas explained why he thinks a series revival couldn’t work, and why the movie spin-offs are so popular. The actor and comedian described movies as “special occasion[s],” which can go wild with their storytelling scope. However, sitcoms, especially ones made in the U.K., highlight the mundanity of life, and use that as their comedic core — which wouldn’t work as well considering The Inbetweeners are now adults. He explained:
“A film can be a special occasion. A film is about a disruption to normality, whereas the sitcom is about what normality is like. A film is a story with an ending. Whereas a sitcom is more like going down the pub with a friend who’s funny, and it’s just open-ended.”
