“Oh, Captain — my Captain!” Ms. Marvel’s (Iman Vellani) obsession with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is arguably the most charming aspect of the much-maligned superhero film, The Marvels. And only three months after the film started its theatrical release, the latest big-screen installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is headed to Disney+ on Wednesday, February 7. When The Marvels opened in cinemas on November 10, 2023, fans of the MCU couldn’t fathom the train wreck the sequel to 2019’s billion-dollar success, Captain Marvel, would become. But the early signs that The Marvels was destined to fail financially were manifest during its opening-weekend numbers. The film set the record for the lowest-grossing opening (domestically) in the MCU with a paltry three-day total of $46.1 million.

The Marvels also became the first film in the MCU franchise not to make $100 million domestically during its theatrical run. The Captain Marvel sequel only managed to make $84.5 million before it limped out of theaters only eight weekends after its initial release.

A number of Sony’s Spider-Man-related Marvel movies are scheduled for 2024. And, hopefully, they can get the bad taste left by The Marvels out of the mouths of MCU diehards. Madame Web (February 14), Kraven the Hunter (August 30) and Venom 3 (November 8) are all poised to improve upon The Marvels’ poor box office numbers, but it will likely be Deadpool 3 (July 26) that wins the MCU fans back who fell off the bandwagon during The Marvels debacle.

When all the smoke cleared, The Marvels also became the lowest-grossing film of the entire MCU (globally) with a worldwide take of only $206 million. Critics weren’t very kind to the Captain Marvel sequel either, but the film’s Tomatometer rating of 62% is hardly the worst in the MCU. That dubious honor still goes to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s abysmal 46%.

Fans were more forgiving, and they gave The Marvels an audience score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, The Marvels “B” CinemaScore is identical to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s “B” rating. But despite all of the controversy surrounding Aquaman 2, the last DCEU film has already made $396.2 million worldwide in just a month of theatrical release. This is just one more example that illustrates the epic failure of The Marvels financially.
