Apr 24, 2025

The Old Guard 2

gets a new batch of images, revealing Charlize Theron’s return as Andy. Released in 2020 and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard follows a team of immortal mercenaries as they attempt to eliminate an enemy attempting to replicate their powers. After a long time in development, The Old Guard 2 is now on the horizon, with Victoria Mahoney stepping in as director, and returning stars including Chiwetel Ejiofor, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Marwan Kenzari.
Netflix now shares four new images from The Old Guard 2, showing Theron in action as Andy alongside the returning members of her team. In addition to confirming that the sequel will release on July 2, the streamer also includes a logline for the movie, which teases a story revolving around the emergence of an ancient threat. Check out both the logline and the new images below:

Grappling with her newfound mortality, Andy sees a new threat emerge thousands of years in the making.

What The New Images Mean For The Old Guard 2

An Exciting Change Is On The Way In The Netflix Sequel

One of the more unique elements of The Old Guard was the mixing of old weaponry with modern combat. The images above confirm that this element of the franchise will be returning, with Theron’s Andy shown holding her distinctive battleaxe in two of them. While the images are careful not to reveal the ancient threat mentioned in the logline, the one of Andy in a tunnel walking past three dead or incapacitated soldiers suggests that at least part of the movie will take place underground.

The Old Guard 2: Why The Movie’s Release Date Changed, & Reshoots Explained

The Old Guard 2 is the sequel to the 2020 Charlize Theron movie and several production delays have backed up the film’s release schedule.

The Old Guard’s ending sees Andy lose her powers of immortality, but this clearly hasn’t affected her willingness to engage in life-or-death combat with her enemies. The images don’t speak to exactly how this Andy change will play into the sequel’s story, however, and how this may affect her leadership or the team dynamic. The first Old Guard earned generally positive reviews from critics in 2020, resulting in an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, and it remains unclear how the sequel’s changes will impact its critical reception.

The Old Guard 2 features several new cast members not included in the images, including Uma Thurman and Henry Golding.

Our Take On The Old Guard 2 Images

Theron Continues Her Action Hero Streak

With the release of movies like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Atomic Blonde (2017), Theron has proven herself one of the most exciting female action heroes working in Hollywood today. The images tease that she will once more be front and center, dishing out carnage with her battleaxe, and that could be reason enough to check out The Old Guard 2, even if one isn’t familiar with the source material and hasn’t seen the original movie.
One of the most exciting changes in The Old Guard 2 is the fact that Andy is now mortal. This significantly raises the stakes, but it certainly sounds like the fantasy element of the franchise will still be present in other ways, and this could make for a strong combination. Many questions remain about The Old Guard 2, but the latest images and logline are sure to only increase anticipation for the film.
