Investigation Discovery has created controversy after releasing the trailer for The Price of Glee, an upcoming documentary focusing on the show’s dark side. In particular, the show explores how ten unknown actors rose to fame on the show, and now three of them have passed away. That refers to the deaths of Cory Monteith, Mark Salling, and Naya Rivera. The docuseries is set to premiere on Jan. 16, and it will also start streaming that day on Discovery+.
The trailer doesn’t feature any cast members, though The Price of Glee included the involvement of family and friends of the late Glee stars. Writer Ashley Ray also noted on Twitter that “cast and crew are involved,” though no specific names were given. Kevin McHale, who played Artie in the series, threw a flag on that comment with his response. He suggests that no cast members are actually involved and refers to the ID doc as “trash.”

“Show me this ‘cast’ you speak of. This is (trash emoji),” McHale tweeted. “This was the nice version, ftr. Don’t make me speak on this again.”
Ray has since clarified that she misspoke, tweeting that it is “crew and family not crew and cast.” Though she apologized to McHale, she suggested that it didn’t make much difference to the story that ID would be telling with the doc. She attached an image of the official series description that clearly notes that no cast members are actively involved.
The description reads, in part, “The Price of Glee unpacks the cast members’ lives on and off set through never-before-seen interviews showcasing the demands of being on a hit TV series and dark behind-the-scenes drama. With unbiased filters, hear directly from those outside of the cast bubble who can provide no-strings-attached perspectives, such as: relatives and friends of Glee cast members; those who were on the set and close to it such as set decorators, hairdressers, stylists, and publicists; and entertainment reporters who covered the phenomenon.”

Three shocking deaths have befallen three cast members since the show’s premiere. Cory Monteith passed away from an overdose during the course of the series, and his character also died in the show as the others paid tribute. Mark Salling died by suicide weeks ahead of his sentencing after pleading guilty to child pornography possession. Naya Rivera died after a boating trip with her young son went awry, as investigators believe she drowned after using every bit of strength she had to save her child before submerging.
The Price of Glee is set to premiere on Monday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery. That same day it will also make its streaming debut on Discovery+.
