The ‘Spa Weekend’ Cast Reveals the Comedy Legends They Want in the Sequel

Aug 23, 2026

The female-led ensemble comedy is one of the greatest genres, regularly producing some of the most fun, rewatchable films. From Bridesmaids to Girls Trip, The First Wives Club to Bad Moms, there’s nothing better than watching women let loose. There’s something empowering about it, too. Women are often relegated to the sidelines playing supporting wives or bland mother roles, so any time they’re allowed to take center stage is worth celebrating. Spa Weekend follows in this tradition of raunchy, hilarious films, seeing a group of women consisting of single mom Jane (Leslie Mann), workaholic Sophie (Anna Faris), unapologetically angry Coco (Michelle Buteau), and party girl Mel (Isla Fisher) go on a trip for Jane’s birthday. Unfortunately, the getaway proves to be anything but relaxing, with overbearing bosses, bitter separations, and friendship drama threatening to ruin the vacation. Can hot yoga instructors, lounging by the pool, and drug-fueled shenanigans help them rekindle their love for each other, themselves, and maybe some unexpected romantic partners? Or are they doomed to crash as hard as a golf cart going over a sand dune? Collider got the chance to talk to the main quartet of Spa Weekend’s funny ladies. During the conversation, they discussed the film’s surprisingly moving message, sizzling romances, wildest stunts, dream ideas for the sequel, and more.
The ‘Spa Weekend’ Cast Breaks Down the Movie’s Surprisingly Moving Message

“The world feels very dark right now.”

COLLIDER: First of all, congratulations on this movie. It’s such a fun time. I want to start with you, Isla, because you have some wild outfits in this movie. I’m curious how you worked with the costume designer to shape her look, and then, how did that influence how you played her? ISLA FISHER: Okay, for starters, I loved my costumes. Thank you for highlighting that. I really did. And when I left the movie, I actually took all the jewelry, and I kept some of the outfits, and I was absolutely obsessed with that whole thing. We wanted her to be kind of iconic in her own way, but still cool and edgy. I loved all of our costumes, actually. ANNA FARIS: I feel like you kept your character kind of low in the saddle, you know what I mean? Specifically those pants. FISHER: I was not that comfortable in my leopard print yoga outfit, but I surrendered to it. Michelle, I thought the message that your character sends was really powerful because women have a right to be angry, but it’s also self-care to not let that anger control you. I’m curious how you sort of resonated with that or what appealed to you about that aspect of your character. MICHELLE BUTEAU: The world feels very dark right now, and you could actually really be upset and cry about something every day throughout the day. So when people say, “Joy is radical care, and we’re just trying to keep our minds together,” it’s that. It’s reminding yourself, yes, there are these problems, but you also have to [find joy], and that’s self-care, right? Making sure that you laugh, and have a good time, and you spend your time with people that you love. And I feel like every woman in this movie — whether it’s my character figuring out how not to be angry and feel cheated by life all the time, or Jane’s character trying to figure out how to choose her first, or Mel’s character trying to figure out how to fit in but still stay true to herself, or Sophie’s character trying to stick up for herself– FARIS: Sophie’s just trying to put two and two together. She’s just doing some simple math. BUTEAU: No, Sophie’s character is also very complicated. It’s giving Working Girl. It’s giving ‘you’re the smartest person in the room, but no one’s gonna take you seriously because of how you look, or you’re a woman,’ whatever it is.
Leslie Mann Talks ‘Spa Weekend’s Hottest Romance

“I think that you have a natural sensuality.”

I love the friendship, but I also love the romance that we got. I feel like Sophie’s really the only character we didn’t see find love, or at least a fun little one-night stand. FARIS: Oh, but I have a backstory. You guys know that Greg has been pretty stressed out. BUTEAU: Greg is Sophie’s husband. FARIS: He likes to spend a lot of time in his man cave that he built. He’s been unemployed. BUTEAU: Sophie’s getting pounded every weekend! Get out of here! FISHER: She’s too busy upgrading the systems at the spa resort. BUTEAU: That’s why Sophie can work — she’s getting her back blown, I think. Sorry, I wasn’t supposed to say that. FARIS: I think the sequel is Sophie’s journey. FISHER: Sophie’s choice. BUTEAU: Sophie’s choice! FARIS: I would joke about Greg all the time, and I am one of those nerdy character actors that likes to think about— LESLIE MANN: Your backstory? FISHER: She really did stay in character for a lot of it. FARIS: [In breathy voice] Well, it’s pretty easy. I really loved the relationship that Jane has with Kai. That hand massage scene — it was sexy! It’s bizarre, but it is very sexy in a way, too. I’m curious how you found that grounded romantic element in something that, on paper, is pretty absurd. MANN: [Laughs] How did I find it? Well, I guess you just kind of believe the moment. FARIS: I think that you have a natural sensuality. It’s like part of your essence. It’s a little intimidating. MANN: Really? Wow. I don’t see myself that way, but thank you. FARIS: It’s also behind your eyes. You have finesse. FISHER: Should I move chairs? MANN: [Reaches across Fisher to hold Faris’ hand] Tell me more. FARIS: We never really got a chance to talk about the other ladies around.
‘Spa Weekend’s Cast Loved the Film’s Physical Comedy

“They’re really good at hijinks.”

I really loved all the physical comedy in this movie. I feel like we’ve really lost the art of slapstick in modern times. I’m curious if you can talk about getting to flex that physical comedy muscle a little bit in this. MANN: Sophie flying out of the golf cart makes me laugh so hard. FARIS: My bread and butter, baby. BUTEAU: I also want to give a shout-out to the writer/directors, Scott and Jon, because they love that stuff as much as we do, and if they didn’t have it already baked into the script, there’s nothing for us to sort of elevate. They’re really good at hijinks. I miss physical comedy. I miss slapstick. FISHER: They also let you. I’d go, “I’m gonna steal shit in the scene” and just do it. I was always waiting to be told off, and then, at a certain point, I was like, “Well, I don’t know if anyone’s even at video village, so I’m just gonna do it.” I feel like the bloopers really showcase the fact that there was a lot of improv in this movie. Is there a favorite improv moment from anybody, whether it made it onto the screen or not? BUTEAU: Isla with Kai. Adam Demos left that scene being like, “Wow.” And I’m like, “Yeah, that’s what it is.” Dress him down. FISHER: I like the scene we had with the dead bird. Did that stay in the movie? MANN: No. Can you tell me more about the dead bird? FISHER: It was just a little bit that we had. I think a little Mel went a long way, and they had to trim some of it. In the end, you sort of found out her backstory, but I don’t think that ended up either. In fact, I was mainly cut out of the movie. No, I’m just kidding. [Laughs] We’re saving it all for the sequel. FISHER: Exactly. I also really loved the soundtrack in this movie. I thought there was some really good music. What songs would you have to add to the girls’ trip playlist if you guys were making one? BUTEAU: I think a little bounce music. I like a little Big Freedia when Mel is hosting the party. We all love a modified mom twerk. FISHER: I like a bit of Cardi B. I like the filth. MANN: I can’t believe they left the motorboating in. BUTEAU: When you motorboated me? FISHER: It’s slo-mo. MANN: It’s slow-motion motorboating. FISHER: But also the photos of us. I didn’t remember that. That wasn’t me! I swear, that wasn’t me. BUTEAU: The photos were wild.
The ‘Spa Weekend’ Cast Reveals the Films That Both Scarred and Inspired Them

“There was a whole genre of women leading comedy back in the ‘80s.”

One of my favorite moments in this movie is when Jane walks in on her young kids watching Pulp Fiction. I’m curious, is there a movie that you all watched way too young that either scarred you for life or maybe encouraged you to want to go into filmmaking? BUTEAU: The Exorcist made me go to church. MANN: Jaws ruined the ocean for me. FISHER: Everything with Goldie Hawn. I just wanted to be Goldie Hawn when I was a kid, so I would just watch all of her movies. BUTEAU: Overboard.

FARIS: Sick day movie. I saw Halloween at too young an age. MANN: Wait, so how did Goldie Hawn movies fit into what she asked? FISHER: She asked what inspired you to maybe move into the business, and I was saying, for me, I think watching those older movies with Gilda Radner, Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Ruthless People — there was a whole genre of women leading comedy back in the ‘80s. FARIS: Wow. I didn’t understand the question with my Halloween answer. No, no, no — you did! It was scarred you or inspired you! BUTEAU: [Laughs] This is very telling of where we’re at. It’s all right! We’re on a spa weekend.
The ‘Spa Weekend’ Cast Already Has Ideas for a Sequel

“It’s the greatest sequel ever.”

We’re joking so much about a sequel, but do you have any pitches or things you would love to see for your character if we did get to see them again? FARIS: Sophie finds out that Greg wants an open marriage. BUTEAU: Oh, wow. FISHER: That’s a little male-centric. FARIS: He’s bisexual, and he tells Sophie this is a make it or break it. He feels like he’s dying inside, and he spends a lot of time in the man cave — you know that. So Sophie’s made that big decision. She’s also gotten a job, and she works in Monaco. MANN: It doesn’t work anymore with the time difference. FARIS: Yeah, so that’s tough for Sophie, but you know what, she’s gonna find her prince. BUTEAU: I’d like to see Roger and Coco get back at it. I think you could have a lull in a marriage. FISHER: I think also we could have Kai and Jane get married, and then, at the wedding, we have a bachelorette party, and then we bring in four more really fun actresses we love, like Kathryn Hahn and like Kristen Wiig, and we all just have so much fun, and it’s the greatest sequel ever. [Turns to Mann] And Goldie Hawn is your mother! Because she’s amazing! Full-circle! And Bette Midler’s my sister. BUTEAU: And Vanessa Williams is my mom. FISHER: Yes! Spa Weekend is now in theaters.
