The Witcher Fans Unhappy That Henry Cavill Could Be Recast Using an MCU-Style Multiverse
Aug 1, 2023
The Witcher executive producer Tomek Bagiński has further hinted at how the role of Geralt will change from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth, and fans do not sound happy. Speaking with Radio Times, Bagiński tried to carefully address the recasting and how it will play out, revealing that those who know the books “really deeply” will understand that there is “not just one world” and teased that this will be how Cavill changes into a Hemsworth.
“Lauren [Schmidt Hissrich, showrunner] and her team – and there are a few really good writers returning to the writers’ room for season 4 – I think they cobbled together a really nice opening which is really true to the books. This is a very little thing that I will tease – people who know the books really deeply also know that this is not a typical fantasy book. It’s not just one world. It’s not just one story happening in those books, in those stories. It’s a huge, huge world which is very, very complex… I will stop here!”
This is not the first time that the change from Cavill to Hemsworth has been addressed, and that the writers may use a ‘multiverse-esque’ element to make it happen. “We have a very, very good plan to introduce our new Geralt and our new vision for Geralt with Liam,” Bagiński said previously. “Not going deeply into those ideas because this will be a huge spoiler, it’s also very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books, especially in book five.”

The Witcher Fans Are Unhappy With the Idea of an MCU Multiverse
Netflix
But does the kind of multiversal madness that would see Henry Cavill’s Geralt replaced with a different version now played by Liam Hemsworth really suit the world of The Witcher? Fans don’t seem to think so…
While The Witcher source material has involved traveling across time and space and other worlds and realities, it does not play out like the MCU’s idea of there being different variants of each character. But it’s sounding more and more like this is what Netflix has in mind…
Before the madness of the multiverse takes hold, audiences still have the final part of Henry Cavill’s The Witcher adventure to enjoy, with the actor walking away from the series at the end of the third season. “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” the official synopsis for The Witcher season three reads. “Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”
Volume one of The Witcher season three is now available to stream on Netflix, with volume two due to land on the streaming platform on July 27.
