Thunderbolts* Will Not Reveal Title Meaning Until Movie’s Release
Jul 29, 2024
The Thunderbolts arrived at San Diego Comic-Con, with the cast of the movie showing up to briefly discuss the movie. While many fans hoped that there would be some unexpected reveals about the upcoming movie, they were mostly left disappointed, especially when it was announced that fans will not discover the meaning of that * in the title until the movie rolls out next year.
During the panel, the stars of the film shared some little tidbits of details about their own roles in the movie, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who explained how “Valentina is after power, control, and I would say just generally she wants to kick ass in the Marvel universe.” Florence Pugh added that she has done many of her own stunts in the movie, and Sebastian Stan noted that Pugh’s performance is the reason the movie is great. Meanwhile, Wyatt Russell promised that audiences will love his character, US Agent.
Thunderbolts* will now be the final movie in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Lee Sung Jin, the story will follow the titular group of heroes and antiheroes. The group is made up of plenty of familiar faces from this history of Marvel, including Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman, meanwhile, will star as Robert Reynolds, aka Sentry, a character who is often described as Marvel’s Superman and who manifests the personalities of both a hero and a villain.

Over the last few years, there have been many reports, quotes, and insights into so-called superhero “fatigue.” However, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Wyatt Russell, who will reprise the role of John Walker, aka U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts*, has assured fans that the upcoming team-up movie will bring something different in the franchise, declaring “it’s time to make a good Marvel movie.”
“But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past. I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.’ And as far as how we are approaching it, it’s time to go to work a little bit, it’s time to make a good Marvel movie so let’s do that and work hard at it and don’t take things for granted.”

Thunderbolts* is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 5, 2025, as the last film of Phase Five of the MCU. Prior to this, Captain America: Brave New World will first light up the big screen on February 14, 2025. Of course, currently, reigniting the MCU falls to Deadpool & Wolverine, and based on the current box office takings, it may have already succeeded.
