Timothy Olyphant Joins Anya Taylor-Joy in Apple TV’s ‘Lucky’ Adaptation

Feb 2, 2025

Timothy Olyphant won’t be digging coal with Justified co-star Walton Goggins this time around, but he is returning to the small screen in an upcoming Apple TV+ limited series titled Lucky. Olyphant joins the show’s lead, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Annette Bening in an adaptation of the 2021 heist novel of the same name by author Marissa Stapley. The actor is slated to portray Lucky’s dad (per Variety).
In the book, Lucky Armstrong (Taylor-Joy) is the “plucky protagonist” and grifter, who has managed to make off with a million dollars, along with her boyfriend. Lucky wants to start a new life, but that’s when the real complications begin. Check out the synopsis for Stapley’s New York Times bestseller courtesy of the author’s official website below:

“Lucky finds herself alone for the first time, navigating the world without the help of either her father or her boyfriend, the two figures from whom she’s learned the art of the scam. When she discovers that a lottery ticket she bought on a whim is worth millions, her elation is tempered by one big problem: cashing in the winning ticket means the police will arrest her for her crimes.

She’ll go to prison, with no chance to redeem her fortune. As Lucky tries to avoid arrest and make a future for herself, she must confront her past by reconciling with her father; finding her mother, who abandoned her when she was just a baby; and coming to terms with the man she thought she loved — whose complicated past is catching up to her, too.”

Lucky marks but one of two upcoming projects Justified actor Timothy Olyphant will appear in on Apple TV+. He will also star alongside Owen Wilson in a 10-episode golf comedy, which will feature Olyphant portraying “a successful, former golf pro,” according to Variety.
‘Lucky’ Teams Anya Taylor-Joy With a Stacked Cast and Crew

Whether Anya Taylor-Joy joins the cast of Spider-Man 4 is still anyone’s guess, but the Hollywood mainstay has plenty on her plate to keep her busy. In addition to starring as the criminal protagonist in Apple TV+’s Lucky, Taylor-Joy is also serving as an executive producer on the project. The adaptation also features Reese Witherspoon as an EP, who actually featured author Marissa Stapley’s novel in her very own book club. Witherspoon delved into the genesis of the heist novel-turned-series in a statement (per Variety):

“Reese’s Book Club began with the goal of deepening connections – to the stories, to the storytellers, and to the community we are building. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to amplify these female-centric stories and their authors, see our community connect with them, then see them take on a whole new life on screen.

We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Apple TV+ and the incomparable Anya Taylor-Joy, plus our brilliant creator Jonathan Tropper and his wonderful co-showrunner Cassie Pappas, to bring this compelling series – based on Marissa Stapley’s fantastic novel – to audiences around the world.”

Literature is the perfect mining ground for movie plots. Throughout the years, the following books have been adapted way more times than the rest.

Teaming Timothy Olyphant, who absolutely killed it in the must-see Justified and its follow-up, Justified: City Primeval, with Anya Taylor-Joy should give the Apple TV+ limited series some serious clout. Now, whether this Taylor-Joy streaming saga will be as beloved as her triumph on Netflix, The Queen’s Gambit, remains to be seen. However, the blueprint for Lucky is a solid one, given the incredible work Stapley penned and cranked out into a best-selling novel.
