To All The Boys Writer Set To Adapt Fan-Favorite Fantasy Book From NYT Best-Selling Author

Jun 4, 2025

To All the Boys writer Sofia Alvarez is set to adapt a fan-favorite fantasy book from a New York Times best-selling author. Alvarez is best known for penning the adaptation of Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and co-writing the sequel To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, based on the books by Jenny Han, which star Lana Condor as a reserved teenager who writes letters to boys she has secretly admired. The two films received critical acclaim and became some of the most-watched original titles on the service. Now, after a fierce bidding battle involving multiple studios, Paramount Pictures has secured the film rights to Divine Rivals, the popular fantasy romance novel by Rebecca Ross and the first installment in her bestselling Letters of Enchantment series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez will write the screenplay for the adaptation. The project will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura through his first-look deal with Paramount, alongside Pouya Shahbazian, known for his work on book-to-film adaptations such as the Divergent series.
What This Means For The Divine Royals Movie

What Is The Book About?

The story, set against the lingering echoes of a mythical war between rival gods, follows two young and competing journalists who, while bitter rivals in public, unknowingly fall in love by exchanging anonymous letters through a magical typewriter. As their secret correspondence blossoms into love, they remain unaware of each other’s true identity. The book blends the charm of the 1998 romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail with the gritty atmosphere of World War I, all set in a world with magic.

Shortly after its publication in April 2023, Divine Rivals quickly became a sensation on BookTok, where enthusiastic fans and viral posts played a major role in launching the novel to widespread popularity across social media. This buzz contributed to the remarkable success of the Letters of Enchantment series, which has remained on The New York Times bestseller list for over 125 weeks. According to the publisher, the series has surpassed one million copies sold. A prequel, Wild Reverence, is set for release on September 2.
Our Take On Sofia Alvarez Adapting Divine Royals

She’s A Great Choice

Given her proven success with To All the Boys, Sofia Alvarez is a great choice to adapt Divine Royals into a movie. Both are romance novels in which characters writing heartfelt letters lead to romances, a story that Alvarez has previously navigated with nuance and charm. With her at the helm, Divine Royals has a chance to become a beloved film franchise bigger than To All the Boys, and more on the level of Harry Potter or The Hunger Games. Source: THR
