Tony Gilroy Says Lucasfilm Has A ‘Star Wars’ Horror Project In The Works

Apr 11, 2025

After “Andor,” what’s next for the “Star Wars” Universe on Disney+? After the show’s second and final season ends later this year (and, yes, showrunner Tony Gilroy confirmed he won’t be back for any more “Star Wars“), there will be a big void on the streamer when it comes to must-watch content set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Well, Mr. Gilroy may have leaked something Lucasfilm has in the works post-“Andor,” and it sounds especially enticing.  In a brief talk with Business Insider on the red carpet this week, the director and showrunner teased that one of the franchise’s next installments may be a horror project. When asked what he’d like to see “Star Wars” do next, Gilroy joked that he wants “a three-camera sitcom in “Star Wars” or a horror movie.” Then Gilroy seemingly confirmed the project.  “”They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah,” he continued.
Of course, Gilroy reeled back his statements a bit, fully aware of how seriously the “Star Wars” fans take the franchise and its future. “I’m agnostic about what should be done. I was riffing on the thing where I said, ‘Oh, do a three-camera comedy,’ so I was riffing. Sometimes riffing doesn’t work with the “Star Wars” community.”
So was Gilroy just “riffing” or will the long-running get a shot of life it desperately needs with a horror film set in the universe? It’s entirely possible, but it’s also entirely possible that Gilroy wasn’t serious. And given the current state of the “Star Wars” universe, it would be surprising if any project goes beyond active development and into production any time soon. “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie will hit theaters in May 2026, but nothing is firmly in the pipeline outside of that.
But “Andor” Season 2 premieres on Disney+ on April 22, and that should slake “Star Wars” fans’ thirst for content. It also helps that Gilroy’s show is the most critically regarded recent work in the franchise, far and away more beloved than anything else.  Speaking about the show, Gilroy said, “The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything. So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favor that we were given from “Mandalorian,” and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool.”
And a “Star Wars” horror film would be pretty cool; let’s see if it really happens, though.
