Two MCU Sequels Reportedly Added To Offical Production Schedule

Jun 12, 2023

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is still expanding, but perhaps not as rapidly as was first believed. However, even with production seeming to be slowing to take more care in the final product, two new Marvel sequels have been reported to now be part of Marvel Studios’ slate of films that are in production.

Both Eternals 2 and Shang-Chi 2 were never in doubt as part of Marvel’s future offerings, but there has been little news about either project other than some internet rumors and a seemingly misguided comment by Patton Oswalt earlier this week. Now according to a report via The Direct, both of these movies have been “added to Marvel Studios production calendar.” In many ways, despite this not being an official Marvel confirmation, it makes a lot of sense considering where these two movies are expected to fit in the MCU’s future.

The real question is where exactly these two movies will fit into Marvel’s tightly packed schedule, and although there has been nothing confirmed at this time, there have been some previous hints about when and where both the Eternals and Shang-Chi could make their next appearance.

Eternals 2 is tricky to place in the timeline of Marvel’s upcoming movies, as from the cliffhanger ending of 2021’s debut of the superhero team there are stories to be resolved that have nothing to do with the current MCU multiverse narrative. For this reason, it is likely that while there is certainly a possibility of some of the characters from Eternals being seen in other movies, their next solo movie will likely not happen until after Avengers: Secret Wars brings the Multiverse Saga to a close.

Shang-Chi 2 is a different prospect entirely. Last year it was reported that the Shang-Chi sequel will be entitled Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time, which immediately gave the impression that the film could be one of the ones still to be slotted in between Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. With The Kang Dynasty believed to bring about a collision of worlds that will signal the beginning of the end for the Multiverse, and Secret Wars assumedly making things right again in whatever way the MCU plays it, Shang-Chi’s sequel is likely to be directly linked to both of these movies.

There are still several years until the end of the Multiverse Saga, and currently there is no way of telling where Marvel will go next, although there have been plenty of rumors of a cosmic battle with Galactus being on the cards, or the ever popular theory of Mephisto being on the horizon, and of course the arrival of the X-Men. This means that there are still many more characters to be introduced to the MCU who will need to fit around the existing roster of heroes. The Eternals and Shang-Chi certainly have an important role to play in future, but for more specific details, fans are just going to have to be patient a little longer.
