An Uncharted 2 movie is officially in development, Sony Pictures executive Steven O’Dell confirms. Based on the Naughty Dog video game franchise, the Uncharted movie was released in 2022, following the young thief Nathan Drake as he is recruited by the seasoned treasure hunter Victor Sullivan to find the fabled fortune that once belonged to Ferdinand Magellan. The Uncharted cast was led by Tom Holland as Nate and Mark Wahlberg as Sully alongside Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Rudy Pankow.

Now, over two years after the video game adaptation’s release, a sequel is officially in development. During Sony’s presentation at the 2024 CineEurope trade show (via Variety), O’Dell mentioned that a sequel to Uncharted is one of their many movies in development. However, there was no confirmation that Holland is returning.

Released in theaters in February 2022, Uncharted reviews weren’t especially kind to Holland’s video game adaptation, calling it well-cast, but largely unable to live up to its source material, rendering it a disappointing imitation of better action-adventure movies like Indiana Jones. Despite major delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Uncharted actually performed surprisingly well in theaters, grossing $407 million to become the fifth-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. Given this box office success, it’s certainly no surprise that Sony is developing a sequel.

Around the time Uncharted was released in theaters, there were some early teases that a sequel would happen. Director Ruben Fleischer shared that he already had ideas for a sequel, though he didn’t go into further detail. In 2023, producer Charles Roven indicated Sony was interested in exploring an Uncharted sequel. Earlier this year, Wahlberg said he was told to “Start growing your mustache” in preparation for his return as Sully. However, O’Dell’s mention at the CineEurope Presentation is the first official confirmation that Uncharted 2 is in development.

Though Uncharted 2 is officially in development, the cast remains unconfirmed. However, the return of Holland and Wahlberg is seemingly necessary for a sequel. In terms of the sequel’s story, the Uncharted ending teases that Nate’s brother, Sam, is still alive and in prison, setting up a sequel that focuses on Nate’s efforts to find him. Additionally, the introduction of Gage, who seeks Nate’s ring linked to Sir Francis Drake, hints at a more personal and adventurous treasure hunt in Uncharted 2.
