‘Very Young Frankenstein’ Series in the Works at FX With Mel Brooks

Jun 27, 2025

It’s alive! It’s alive… again! Well, almost. A new comedy series inspired by Mel Brooks’ iconic comedy film Young Frankenstein (it’s pronounced “Fronk-en-steen,” by the way) is reportedly nearing a pilot order at FX. The news of this project, which is currently titled Very Young Frankenstein, comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Spaceballs is getting a long-overdue sequel — so fans of Brooks’ classic movies seemingly have a lot to be excited about in the coming years, especially since the legendary filmmaker is on board for all of it. As reported by Deadline, Brooks has given his blessing to the Very Young Frankenstein series, and will serve as an executive producer on the project along with his producing partner Kevin Salter and Michael Gruskoff, who produced the original film. Other executive producers include Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch, who all previously worked on the critically acclaimed vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows at FX. They are also expected to bring their comedy-horror flair to the series in other ways, as Robinson is attached as a writer and showrunner, while Waititi is down to direct the pilot episode.

Throughout his long career, Mel Brooks has made his name as the king of parodies and spoof movies. Here are the best performances from his movies.

Plot details are scarce, other than the vague suggestion that the team could take a zany concept from What We Do in the Shadows and build it out into a fully-fledged series based on Young Frankenstein. The description for the reboot curiously recalls: “Previously, on What We Do in the Shadows, Colin Robinson, a main character in the series, was turned into a baby who had to grow up all over again. Whether or not the show creatives have something similar in mind for Very Young Frankenstein is unknown,” but the show’s title certainly fits the idea.
‘Young Frankenstein’ Is Widely Considered One of the Best Ever Comedy Films

20th Century Fox

Very Young Frankenstein certainly has a lot to live up to, as its now-51-year-old predecessor is widely considered one of the best comedy films of all time. The story follows the respected medical lecturer Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (played by the late, great Gene Wilder) as he travels to Transylvania to view the infamous estate he has inherited from his grandfather, Victor Frankenstein. There, he meets his servants, Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga (Teri Garr), and Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman), who assist him in creating his own monster (Peter Boyle). Young Frankenstein is frequently lauded for its clever writing, visual gags, and strong performances, which the team stitched together to create a hilariously absurd parody of classic horror movies. The film holds a 95% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score sits at an impressive 92%, showcasing its enduring appeal and lasting legacy as a comedy great. It remains to be seen whether the next experiment over at FX will be able to live up to Brooks’ former creation, but we’re sure they’ll be puttin’ on the ritz. Source: Deadline
