Vin Diesel Shares Riddick 4 BTS Image Teasing Furyan Desert Scene
Aug 28, 2024
Riddick: Furya gets a new tease from Vin Diesel, who shares an image hyping a desert action sequence. The upcoming fourth installment in the Chronicles of Riddick franchise sees Diesel returning to the titular role once again and reteaming with director David Twohy. After the mixed reception to 2013’s Riddick, the story for Riddick: Furya will feature Diesel’s character returning to his home planet where he finds fellow Furyans fighting for their survival against a dangerous new enemy.
Diesel now shares a new post on Instagram, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the Riddick: Furya production. Check it out below:
The image features Diesel in costume behind the wheel of a dune buggy-type vehicle, with a camera rig fitted to the interior. As for the location, Diesel’s image teases a very Furyan desert backdrop.
Will Riddick 4 Reinvigorate The Franchise?
The Previous Chronicles Of Riddick Movies Have A Mixed Track Record
The Chronicles of Riddick franchise has, historically, excelled on home viewing platforms. 2000’s Pitch Black became something of a cult classic, leading to The Chronicles of Riddick in 2004. Boasting a substantial estimated budget of $110 million, the sequel grossed only $115.9 million worldwide, meaning it didn’t break even at the box office. The third film didn’t arrive until nine years later and was made on a much smaller estimated budget of $38 million. That film ended up being a modest hit and grossing $98.3 million worldwide.
Chronicles Of Riddick Franchise Key Figures Title Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Score Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Estimated Budget Worldwide Box Office Pitch Black (2000) 60% 77% $23 million $53.2 million The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) 29% 65% $110 million $115.9 million Riddick (2013) 58% 56% $38 million $98.3 million
With theatrical interest in the franchise not being overly enthusiastic (and the critical responses tending to be mixed), it’s not surprising that a fourth film has taken so long to get off the ground. The premise of Riddick returning to his home planet where he faces off against a new enemy could suggest that Riddick: Furya will serve as something of a fresh start for the franchise. If no prior franchise knowledge is required for this new entry, it could end up bringing new fans on board.
Outside of the Fast & Furious franchise, which is nearing its conclusion with the upcoming Fast & Furious 11, Diesel hasn’t led a successful franchise in quite some time. Movies like Bloodshot and The Last Witch Hunter weren’t successful critically or commercially, and it’s not clear how much of a draw Diesel alone will be to those who didn’t watch the previous Chronicles of Riddick films. It remains to be seen how Riddick: Furya will fare, but audiences, at the very least, are in for some desert action.
