‘Vision Quest’ Showrunner Discusses MCU Show Plot, Fans, and Canon
May 26, 2025
For a long time, it seemed that Marvel’s Vision Quest
series was never going to happen. Like many teased projects, the WandaVision sequel joined a long list of MCU projects that stacked up to a point where it seemed impossible for all of them to be followed up. However, Vision Quest will be one series that is not going to fall by the wayside, and Paul Bettany’s White Vision will return to continue his story following the climax of WandaVision. Creator and showrunner Terry Matalas recently shared an insight into the ambitious series, and how much of a collaborative effort the show is.

Jac Schaeffer likens writing for Marvel characters to “borrowing” them for a short while.
Appearing on The Sackhoff Show, Matalas told Sackhoff that while there was a specific point to the series, he was given a lot of freedom on how to tell the story. He said:
“There was a kind of logline that was very specific, Kinda like ‘It’s this, this, and this.’ But there were a thousand ways to do exactly that. It was an opportunity to be like, ‘Okay, if you want to do this, then you kinda also want to do this, this, and this.’ And it became this very collaborative experience that’s just been really wonderful. It’s been a really wonderful creative experience, and I think we are making something really special. It’s also scary because they are like, ‘Go do that crazy thing you wanna do.’ And I’m, like, ‘Oh, wow, it’s a big stage to take a big swing on.’ But I think we’re in a really good place.”
‘Vision Quest’ Comes With Plenty of Fan and Canon Pitfalls
Like every Marvel project, Vision Quest will come with a lot of expectations from fans, and plenty of previous history to make sure it sticks by and doesn’t mess with. Matalas addressed this, noting that there could be some unexpected twists in the series that may not “break canon” but should “elevate” the story. He said:
“There are so many different ways to tell a story that’s within canon. It’s also an opportunity to, I don’t wanna say break canon, but to elevate it or make it, or maybe course correct. I like it. Usually, it gives you the opportunity to tell a more interesting story. […] Where it gets hard in cases like Star Trek or Marvel is when there’s so much of it, you want to do a thing that’s, like, a great story, but it actually has been done on a thing you didn’t even know happened. Or it’s being made at the same time.”
There are obviously fans to think about as well. Any retcons or changes made to what is already canon in the MCU can be incredibly divisive, but that is something that Matalas is prepared for.
“It’s not the right way to develop something that has legions of fans and be like, ‘Ignore them, but at the same time, you can stop yourself from making an interesting choice because of fan expectations or whatnot. Because, even as a fan of things [myself], sometimes the fans don’t know what’s good for them. They are like, ‘Wait, what are they doing? They are bringing that character back? Nostalgia!’ Then they see it, and they say, ‘Oh, it’s a new way into an old idea, that’s a thing.’ So, yes [I think about fans] but carefully.”
Vision Quest will be continuing WandaVision’s story in the same way as Agatha All Along, forking away from Wanda’s story but continuing the timelines of other characters from the series. Vision’s story is still pretty sketchy, but it is already bringing back several other “lost” characters, including James Spader reprising his role as Ultron, and Faran Tahir coming back as Ten Rings captain Raza for the first time since Iron Man in 2008.
