‘We Have a Gazillion Ideas’

Summary
Josh Heald reveals that he and his fellow
Cobra Kai
creators “have a gazillion ideas where this series and this franchise goes.”
Jon Hurwitz adds to Heald’s sentiments by saying, “We have significant interest in doing more things in this universe.”
Cobra Kai
will end in 2025, but a new
Karate Kid
movie starring Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will hit theaters in May of that same year.
Cobra Kai never dies might not be just a saying, if the co-creators, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz, of The Karate Kid spin-off have their way where the future is concerned. Both creatives have a plethora of ideas on how they can continue their small-screen version of the Miyagiverse, even though the streaming show will take its final bow after its 15-episode sixth season comes to an end sometime during 2025. And Heald metaphorically gazed into his crystal ball during an interview with Screen Rant:
“So, we always leave food on the vine,
we have a gazillion ideas of where this series and this franchise goes.
But that’s up to the timing and the network studio partners in terms of how heavy and how fast and how soon we lean into all of that.
But, there are some things percolating,
and then there’s about six or seven other ideas that we have to really pour gasoline on
— and that becomes a discussion.”
Along with Hayden Schlossberg, Heald and Hurwitz helped develop Cobra Kai first as a YouTube Original before the series finally found a home on Netflix. During its first five seasons, the talented trio have taken the opportunity to not only redeem some of Daniel LaRusso’s (Ralph Macchio) most fearsome opponents, but Cobra Kai has also endeared itself to both the critics and the fans. And Hurwitz and his colleagues still have plenty they want to explore in the Miyagiverse.
‘We Have Significant Interest in Doing More Things in This Universe’
Most fans are reacting favorably to the official trailer for Cobra Kai Season 6: Part 1, which dropped yesterday morning. The video posted to YouTube alone received nearly 600,000 views and 28,000 likes since being uploaded. And even though Season 6’s extra-large, 15-episode swan song marks the end of the streaming series in 2025, co-creator Jon Hurwitz feels like “we have significant interest in doing more things in this universe.” Hurwitz elaborated in the same interview:
“What we can say is that we have significant interest in doing more things in this universe.
We have multiple ideas of the things that we would like to do.
It’s really just sort of taking the time. We’ve been so busy with this season that we haven’t had those
meetings with Sony and Netflix,
where we’re like,
‘Okay, here’s the overall gameplan of what we would like to do going forward.’”
Related Hilary Swank Denies Cobra Kai Cameo in Sixth and Final Season Despite Creator’s Hints Jon Hurwitz teased the return of The Next Karate Kid, but Hilary Swank herself now says she won’t star in Cobra Kai.
Hurwitz continued:
“Everyone’s aware that we’d like to do more work.
I feel like it’s a mutual feeling, and I think people are aware of certain worlds or areas that we’re talking about.
But, we think that by the end of this season 6, people will still have interest in where these characters can go,
and that there will be fun to be had in, hopefully, different kinds of ways. We’ll see.”
While a Crane-kicking future isn’t certain when it comes to Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio will be continuing as he joins Jackie Chan on the Silver Screen for a new Karate Kid movie on May 30, 2025. And Macchio recently announced he has wrapped filming his part as Daniel LaRusso in director Jonathan Entwistle’s take on the beloved source material.
Cobra Kai Season 6: Part 1
drops Thursday, July 18 on
Netflix.
