Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 May Not Have Kids Defeating Pennywise

Dec 17, 2025

It: Welcome to Derry has repeated one of the big moments of Stephen King’s original “IT” novel, with a group of kids being responsible for defeating Pennywise against all odds. However, this is not something that will necessarily be repeated in future seasons, even though children will continue to feature heavily in the series. In the 1989 and 1962 eras of Derry’s history, two different versions of the Losers’ Club have been responsible for protecting the world from the terror of Pennywise. Although the finale revealed that the Entity has both awareness of its own future and its past, Barbara Muschietti told ComicBook.com that keeping audiences interested means possibly changing things. Asked if there will be a new Losers’ Club in Season 2, Muschietti said:
“I don’t know. There is always going to be children. We love working with them, but mostly Pennywise loves to scare them and feed from their fears. But, also, they are heroes. They are the ones that harness the power of belief. Their innocence allows them to believe they can defeat this cosmic being.
We also want to keep the audience interested and fascinated. That means some things have to be done differently. It’s an exploration. What I will say is we will never not explore bloodlines. That is my favorite part. Also, this hibernation that Pennywise has for 27 years… What 27 years means is that he comes back once every generation and gets to create havoc for that generation, go away, then come back and do the same. It is about generational trauma and whether it can be stopped or not.”

‘Welcome to Derry’ Is Telling Its Story in a Different Way

HBO Max

While many had assumed, mainly based on Andy Muschietti’s previous comments, that each season of Welcome to Derry would be jumping back another 27 years. While there will be another dip back into the history of Derry, this time seemingly in 1935, that does not mean each season is a self-contained arc. Muschietti added:
“No, no, no. It is not a confined arc. This season gives us the ability to do what we would like to do in seasons two and three, which is definitely to explore the bloodlines of the ancestors. But, also, see where the descendants are at. Pennywise doesn’t experience time in a conventional way, so we can do that. We would love to explore that.”
Margie’s theory in the finale episode of season one is that Pennywise could skip back in time to try and kill the 1962 Losers’ Club’s ancestors. This is also something Muschietti says is not exactly what comes next.
“I wish it was as simple as that. We are not doing the Butterfly Effect. It’s more intense than that.”
Whatever comes next, there are plenty of breadcrumbs scattered throughout the first season that could come to fruition in the second “chapter.” This includes General Shaw’s revelation that he has faced Pennywise before when he was a child, something that will potentially be seen in Season 2. However, there are other ties to Derry’s future, such as Henry Bowers’ grandfather, Clint Bowers, and that final cameo of 1988 Beverly Marsh, that also hint the show could go anywhere, and anytime in Derry’s history as its weaves its tale of a town where the dead never really die.
