When The First DCU Character Comes To Max

Nov 14, 2023

Summary

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Blue Beetle will be released on Max, making it the first officially introduced DCU character. Fans of the DCU should catch up on Blue Beetle’s story when the movie releases on Max this month. Blue Beetle will be integrated into the DCU following the 2023 movie, providing continuity for the character.

Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed the Blue Beetle streaming release date on Max, revealing when the upcoming DCU reboot’s first official character will arrive on the streaming. Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle, initially a tenuous part of the DCEU, will be integrated into the DCU later in the same guise as the 2023 movie, making Blue Beetle the first officially introduced DCU character. Catching up on his story so far, then, is necessary viewing for anyone wishing to keep abreast of DCU releases.

Thankfully, Max has confirmed that the streaming release date for Blue Beetle is just one week away, on Friday, November 17. The movie details the origin story of the young DC hero, Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes, who is symbiotically joined with a mysterious piece of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. Reyes, who is the third iteration of Blue Beetle in the comics, is chosen by the Scarab to embody the mantle, bestowing on him a suit of armor replete with various biotech abilities after grafting onto his spine. The movie was critically well-received, and Gunn has confirmed that Reyes will be part of the future DCU reboot.

What’s Next For Blue Beetle In the DC Universe

As is the case with much of the DCU at this point, details are scarce on when and how Reyes will rejoin the ranks of the new cinematic renditions of DC heroes. Confusingly, however, the first Blue Beetle movie is not the first movie in the DCU franchise, with that honor instead going to the anticipated Superman: Legacy. How the DCU will navigate the events of Blue Beetle’s first cinematic outing remains to be seen – but the likelihood is that Blue Beetle will reappear in the DCU’s upcoming Booster Gold project.

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are best friends in the comics, whose relationship provides an ample dose of comic relief. With Blue Beetle being the first established DCU character, it would therefore make sense to have him appear in the planned Booster Gold TV series for the DCU, something which James Gunn and Blue Beetle Director Ángel Manuel Soto have already discussed. A second solo movie – which will be Reyes’ first in the DCU – will not materialize for a while, however, as the DCU is already poised to reestablish some more well-known heroes like Superman and Batman as part of its first phase: “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.”
