2024 has already been a massive year for television, especially on streaming. Netflix released its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, as well as Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman. FX’s hit Fargo also saw the final episodes of its fifth season drop earlier this year, and Shogun made its outstanding debut. In close competition were also Reacher’s and Invincible’s second seasons — both of which carried over into 2024. Only three months into the new year, these newly released shows are already hard to top. However, it appears the best phase of 2024’s TV cycle is only a few months away.

June, and summer in general, is usually seen as the slow period in a TV network’s schedule. Many families choose to spend this time outside, making the most of the longer days and warmer weather. However, 2024 will buck this trend. Prepare to cancel your summer plans and send your kids to their rooms. The biggest TV shows in recent history, alongside some promising new additions, are all releasing in June this year.

June 2024 Sees Major Franchises Returning for New Seasons

Ask anyone what their favorite show was last year, and you’ll likely hear the same series crop up time and time again. The Bear Season 2 was the talk of 2023, and saw the series reach new heights. The beloved FX Original will return for its hotly anticipated 3rd season in June. Fans are desperate for more time in Chicago’s most stressful work environment following the gut-punch ending of Season 2. No new casting details have been announced yet as the project is currently in production — shooting started earlier this month. Fans of The Bear can also rejoice as FX recently announced the smash hit series has been renewed for a 3rd and 4th season.

2022 also saw a triumphant return to form for HBO’s Game of Thrones universe. House of the Dragon — the prequel set 300 years before the start of the original series — helped revive the franchise following the painful 8th and final season of Game of Thrones. Just over 2 years later, House of the Dragon is ready to return for a second season. Season 1 ended with a stunning plot twist and gruesome murder (in true Game of Thrones fashion), and Season 2 is expected to pick up right where its predecessor left off.

With the superhero genre in a steady state of decline at the moment, one series has managed to keep the genre alive. Prime Video’s The Boys has been an immense hit for the streaming service. As the stakes, violence, and satire grow each season, Season 4 is expected to take them to new heights. The hit show has already pilloried the commercialism of social justice, and the corporate greed that runs America. The Boys Season 4 will target the show’s signature satire towards the corruption of the country’s political system, as secret-Supe Victoria Newman pursues her presidential campaign following the events of Gen V.

It’s not all dragons, superheroes, and stress, though. June will also take audiences back to a more refined time, as Netflix’s Bridgerton Season 3, Part 2, hits the platform this June. The show’s third season will follow Netflix’s new release trend. Season 3, Part 1 will debut in May this year, with Part 2 directly releasing the following month. Netflix has been experimenting with this release schedule for a year now, with Stranger Things Season 4, The Witcher Season 3, and the final season of Money Heist all following this structure.

June 2024 Will Also Debut Some Hotly Anticipated New Shows

Its already obvious that June will be a hard month for any new shows to break into. However, Disney’s newest entry into the Star Wars universe has the best chance of succeeding. The eagerly awaited new series, The Acolyte, will finally hit Disney+ this June. The new show has been described as a mystery thriller by Lucasfilm. Way back in 2020, the company tweeted about the new series, saying it will:

“…take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”

In a month that will be dominated by established properties, June 2024 also sees Apple TV+’s newest original series enter the competition as the dark horse. Presumed Innocent is a new limited-series starring Jake Gylenhaal as a Chief Deputy Prosecutor caught in an ongoing trial where a member of Chicago’s Prosecuting Attorney’s office is the lead suspect. The series is based on Scott Turow’s best-selling novel and features an all-star ensemble cast, including, Ruth Negga (Preacher), Bill Camp (Sound of Freedom), and Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven), among many others.

June 2024 will be one of the most exciting months of television in recent history. The 2025 Emmys will likely see their nominations filled with these shows, as the last few years have. Prepare to spend the entire month indoors as June is set to be the best month of TV this year.
