Ryan Gosling explains why he has not yet let his daughters watch Barbie. Ever since the film made its theatrical debut, Gosling has been getting praise for his charismatic performance as Ken. Gosling’s critical Barbie song (written by Mark Ronson), “I’m Just Ken” won Best Original Song at the Critics Choice Awards.

Speaking with E Online, Gosling reveals why he has not let his daughters watch Barbie. Gosling has two young daughters, who have yet to see Barbie because Gosling doesn’t “know if you should watch your father as Ken.” The Gosling children did, however, come “to set one day when [he] did a big musical number.” Check out the full quote from Gosling below:

I don’t know if you should watch your father as Ken. I don’t know what age is a good age to see your father do that. It gets pretty crazy. They’ve seen little parts of it and they came to set one day when I did a big musical number.

The Lasting Impact of Gosling’s Ken and His Song

While Barbie received universal acclaim, Gosling’s performance as Ken is one of the most talked-about aspects of the film. Even aside from the show-stopping “I’m Just Ken”, Gosling delivers a solid performance filled with a combination of over-the-topness and hilarious naivete. These strong acting qualities have earned Gosling several awards nominations, including a Golden Globe nomination.

Gosling is likely to see Barbie legacy live on again next week with the release of the Oscar nominations. The actor is considered a likely pick for a Best Support Actor nod, with Barbie being eligible for numerous other categories as well. Gosling’s number “I’m Just Ken” was also on the Oscar shortlist for Best Original Song, and will hopefully score a nomination there as well.

Related The Barbie Movie Cast & Character Guide Led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the Barbie movie’s cast is full of A-list actors playing either toy-based characters or original creations.

Even if his children have yet to see his performance, Barbie’s legacy makes it clear that Gosling has delivered one of the stronger performances of this year. Assuming he is nominated, Gosling seems likely to lose out on the Oscar win to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr., who has recently beaten him at the Golden Globes. Nonetheless, the unusual joy of Gosling’s Barbie performance is charming, cementing itself as a 2023 film highlight.
