Will Ferrell Talks All Things Daddy’s Home 2

Dec 23, 2022

It’s more daddies and more problems in the uproarious family comedy DADDY’S HOME 2 which arrives on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD today. The film is already available on Digital Download. To celebrate we have a transcribed interview with Will Ferrell to enjoy below!
Why did you want to do a sequel?
WILL:  Well I loved obviously getting to work with mark again.  And you know, I loved- I loved the idea of you know, with this sequel we’d get to see Brad and Dusty working together- kind of get to pick up and see how the co-dadding is coming along. And I mean mostly I think in terms of coming back to do a sequel it was just the fact that Sean and John and thought of this premise of you know, re-introducing not only Brad and Dusty’s relationship but now adding their two fathers into the mix.
What will audiences love most about the sequel?
WILL:   I think so many times there are sequels run into- to the problem of ‘yes’ the first movie was popular and worked well for whatever reasons. And then trying to justify the reason to make a second one. It’s a hard thing to pull off. And I think this story is unique enough and hits on a whole other set of topics where the first one kind of you know, explored the idea of a blende family and you know, the role between being a father and dad and step-dads and all that. All that terrain. Not were introducing you know, out dads into the picture. One dad you know, Mel’s Kurt who’s kind of cut from the same cloth as Dusty. John and I are kind of mirror image so each other.  And uh and at the same time while everything seems to kind of appear one way um you know, where Kurt and Dusty seem to be estranged throughout the movie they in the end actually kind of learn to communicate better with each other, understand each other better.
Myself and John who seem to have everything in a kind of perfect father-son relationship, it’s not as perfect under the surface. So we kind of get to discover new layers of the story that I think really justify the reason for making a second movie.

Will that make this one better and funnier?
WILL:  I think it is. Mel and John are so funny as these two characters who are you know, kind of diametrically opposed. you know, Don Whitaker is an over-share. He likes to- He’ll talk to anyone and tell them a very boring story form his life that I think are so interesting. Kurt is kind of gruff and you know, doesn’t really read the room that well. So they’re always- everyone’s trying to navigate around each other and I think that dynamic along with the introduction of you know, Mark now has a new wife, a new step-daughter along with her father Roger, Played by john Cena. So it’s- we’re spinning about 8 plates in the air at the same time and along with Linda’s competitive feeling towards mark’s new wife so there’s so many dynamics that we’re- if you made a list of them you know, it would seem like a difficult task to figure out how to give equal space to each storyline.
But that’s why I think this sequel is gonna you know, has a potential to be even better than the first one, is that the writer’s were able to kind of equally blend all that together you know, in a pleasing way.
Why are Mel and John the perfect additions as the grandfathers?
WILL:   Well when we talked about the idea of doing a sequel, and once we kind of landed on this premise, it wasn’t a slamdunk in the sense that yes we loved the idea but we knew that it really could be executed by you know, a short list of actors.  Someone who was both believable and in tone to play, to play Kurt and Don and uh so we kind of- we still had to thread the needle with finding that, those two you know, perfectly cast guys. And so you know, and luckily we ended up with Mel and and John. I think it’s exciting for audiences just to see Mel Gibson do a comedy like this.  He hasn’t done something like this in a long time.  And you forget what a- he’s really a gifted comedic actor and just kind of plays all the moments no matter how bizarre or outlandish they are, he plays them very real.

We’re talking about john Lithgow.
WILL:  Yes. Uh john once again (coughs)
Will:  Yes so as perfect as Mel is for Kurt, so is John to play Don. And he is extremely gregarious you know, tells these perfectly boring, benign stories that I think are so interesting. And he’s- we both- It’s kind of a great scene at the airport where we get to introduce um as I said, Mel  coming down the escalator and then John’s character is right behind him and we have a thing where we just, we don’t even think twice about kissing each other on the lips when we say hello,. And uh so in the course of us saying hi to each other and how have you been, we kiss each other like three or four times.  And it sets up this thing where Mark and Mel  have to watch this and kind of you know, have this unspoken dialogue of like, really we’re gonna be hanging out with these two guys?
So we kind of couldn’t have landed on two better actors to play our dads.
Similar traits that Dusty and Kurt have?
WILL:  You know, I think they’re both kind of what you would think of in a comedic way as you know, like the perfect guy. They can kind of tackle any sort of problem without you know, having to worry about it. They’re handy, whether it be outdoors or around the house and this and that. At the same time they’re a little uncomfortable talking about anything that’s too personal. They’re a little distant.  And you see where Mark has tried- Mark’s character has tried to become you know, with my help, the better version of himself, more of engaged father the way uh you know, we reveal that all the stories of where uh Kurt just wasn’t there for him.
And so Mark’s character is kind of- he’s he’s trying to fix those things about himself that he sees in his father.  And I think you know, Brad and his father are similar in in the same ways we mentioned before, in terms of being very into almost too much so, into their families. But at the same time we find out they haven’t been honest with each other the whole time either.

Talk about the kids and how they relate to their grandpas.
WILL:  We have Owen and Scarlett who are back to play Megan and Dillon.  And it’s interesting because they have a relationship with my father who comes by all the time and they’re very comfortable around him, and they find him silly and he tells little you know, stupid grandpa jokes and Kurt Marks dad hasn’t been in the picture that much.  And so they’re a little leery of him at first but at the same time they’re you know, as are kids in that situation. They they kind of find him cool in his own way and start calling him El padre cause he wants top have a nickname to- Don is pop-pop and Kurt whish was grandpa Kurt but he gave a self-imposed nickname El Padre…
What about working with Mark?
WILL:   Yes this is Mark and I’s third movie and it’s nice to  kind of know each other well enough to you know, can really hit the ground running. Any time Sean wants us to change something within a scene we know exactly what to do, how to respond to each other, it’s just very comfortable especially with a much bigger cast. And it’s so were able to kind of step into these scenes where there’s so many voices happening at one time. Which you would think would be, for a lot of people, kind of a competitive situation but we, we just approach it the same way which is nice just to, whatever works for the scene and you know, whatever is the funniest.

Talk about that cabin set?
WILL:  An amazing set, yes, the cabin set was one of the- one of the best sets I ever kind of been a part of or gotten to kind of shoot at. Yea it’s a shame that its s set. Its s shame that someone doesn’t get to live there fulltime.
