With Labor Day, Is Deadpool & Wolverine the Biggest Movie of 2024?
Sep 4, 2024
All hail Marvel Jesus! Yes, Deadpool & Wolverine is passing yet another box office milestone over the Labor Day weekend as the Merc with a Mouth’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure crosses the $600-million mark domestically. Coming into today, the latest entry in the Deadpool franchise is sitting at exactly $599,525,117.00 (per The Numbers).
So, the superhero film will cross the staggering milestone at the end of the day. In doing so, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s epic team-up will become only the 6th MCU film to make more than $600 million in domestic returns. Check out the other films and their numbers below:
Highest-Grossing MCU Films of All Time (Domestic)
Avengers: Endgame ($858.3 million) Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.8 million) Black Panther ($700.1 million) Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8 million) The Avengers ($623.4 million) Deadpool & Wolverine ($600+ million)
Deadpool & Wolverine’s $600 million also catapults the MCU film into very rare air, as director Shawn Levy’s multiversal movie becomes only the 16th film of all-time domestically to make that much money. The list continues to be led by No. 1 Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awaken ($936.7 million), while No. 15 Incredibles 2 ($609 million) just edges out the foul-mouthed Mutant on the milestone list. Now, despite all of its success, Deadpool & Wolverine is not the biggest blockbuster of the 2024 summer movie season.
Inside Out 2 Defeats Deadpool & Wolverine for Summer’s Top Film
Over the summer, Deadpool & Wolverine became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time both domestically and worldwide. So, the latest film in the MCU is accustomed to passing box office milestones already. However, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy’s cinematic collaboration isn’t the top dog when it comes to the 2024 summer movie season. Rather, that honor goes to Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2.
While all of the smart money predicted that Deadpool & Wolverine would win the overall No. 1 ranking over the summer, it was the sequel to 2015’s Inside Out that reigned supreme during the good ole summertime. Domestically, Inside Out 2 made $650 million to take the top spot, while Deadpool & Wolverine slides into No. 2 with its $600-million milestone. Check out the summer’s Top 5 financial performers below:
Summer 2024 Top-Grossing Films (Domestic)
Inside Out 2 ($650 million) Deadpool & Wolverine ($600+ million) Despicable Me 4 ($354.1 million) Twisters ($258 million) Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($194 million)
Inside Out 2 ($1.67 billion) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.25 billion) were also the only two films to crack the $1-billion mark worldwide over the course of a 2024 summer season that fizzled out and finally faded into history over the Labor Day weekend. However, Despicable Me 4 did come very close to joining the billion-dollar club thanks to its global haul of $913.8 million.
So, the summer’s gold, silver and bronze medals go to Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine and Despicable Me 4 respectively. And the fact that these three all surpassed or seriously flirted with $1 billion is a monumental feat given that the abysmal 2024 summer movie season will go down as one of the worst summertimes for films financially outside of the COVID-19 pandemic years (2020-2022).
But, hopefully, the rest of 2024 can make up for some of the last three months’ duds, like The Fall Guy, with highly anticipated titles like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wicked, Moana 2, Joker: Folie à Deux, Gladiator II and Venom: The Last Dance all present on the fall and holiday season’s upcoming dance cards.
