‘Yellowstone’ Sequel Spin-off Officially in Development With Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser
Dec 12, 2024
Taylor Sheridan clearly has Yellowstone stories coursing through his veins. The mastermind behind the franchise not only created the immensely popular parent series, but he is also behind various spin-offs that have kept the brand thriving. With Season 5 coming to a close this Sunday, the show will also be officially ending its run, but that doesn’t mean fans have seen the last of the Dutton family and their friends. In fact, two members of the clan are set for their very own spin-off series.
Per Deadline, deals have been set in stone for Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser to lead a new spin-off series that will see them continuing the story of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, respectively. Sheridan will once again be leading the show as the ultimate brainchild behind the series, and it’s his intention to have other members of the Yellowstone cast make appearances in the spin-off. The series will be set in the same present-day universe as Yellowstone and is said to be more in line with the show that started it all.
As it turns out, negotiations with Reilly and Hauser have been taking place for months, but the exact nature of the continuation was unclear until recently. One angle was to carry on with Yellowstone into Season 6, after the death of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton following the actor’s controversial departure from the series. The pair would have been the new leads of the sixth season. The other option was a spin-off, which is where Reilly and Hauser are officially headed. Given the popularity of the brand and its continued high ratings, it’s no wonder the two actors want to remain in the Yellowstone universe.
The Plan is to Keep the New ‘Yellowstone’ Series in the Family
The spin-off direction also appears to be a business decision for Paramount Global. Yellowstone airs on Paramount Network but has an exclusive streaming deal with Peacock, run by NBCUniversal, already set in place. By making a spin-off as a new show, the future series can remain in house, which will allow Paramount Global to enjoy all the profits and glory of the show should it become a hit, much like the parent series.

We finally know when the prequel series will land on streaming.
There was a big debate regarding whether Yellowstone could still remain a hit without Costner. His John Dutton led the series and was thought to be crucial to the show’s success, but the show has remained a ratings winner. Episode 4 just hit a season-high of 12.1 million viewers for the Paramount Network, ratings that are frankly unheard of in today’s television climate, proving just how potent Yellowstone still is. As it turns out, even though Costner was an important part of the show, Yellowstone is a true ensemble and features other characters fans have latched onto.
Created by Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the various dramatic endeavors of the Dutton family, and the borders of the Yellowstone Dutton ranch. The Dutton family owns the ranch, the largest in Montana, which tends to lead to family drama and conflicts involving the Broken Rock Indian Reservation and other developers. The series also stars Wes Bentley, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham.
The success of the show has led to various offshoots, including the prequel series 1883, which was followed by a sequel prequel series, 1923. The former follows a generation of the Dutton family during the Old West, while the latter focuses on the family during the Western Expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. There are reports that other spin-offs are also in the works, with one being led by Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew McConaughey.
Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner and centers on his character John Dutton. Dutton and his family live on a cattle ranch just a few hours away from Yellowstone National Park. The series chronicles the family’s struggle to defend their home from an Indian reservation and land developers. As if their life wasn’t complicated enough, the Duttons also have medical issues, political aspirations, and family secrets stacked against them.
