Your Favorite 90s Computer Game Goes Horror

Apr 18, 2023

The trailer for Organ Trail reveals a horror movie based on the popular 90s computer game. The Oregon Trail is an educational game that was created to teach grade school students about the realities of the wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon during the 1800s. The educational computer game was later parodied by Organ Trail, which reimagined it as a zombie survival game, and is now making an unexpected leap to the big screen.

Today, Paramount released a surprise trailer for Organ Trail, which can be watched below:

Set in Montana during 1870, the trailer follows a young girl named Abigale and her family traveling across the Oregon Trail. After her family falls victim to a band of bloodthirsty bandits and Abigale is the sole survivor of the attack, she must do whatever it takes to reclaim her family’s only possession, a horse, from the clutches of the ruthless gang.

Everything We Know About The Organ Trail

The Organ Trail cast includes Riverdale’s Zoé De Grand Maison, Dopesick’s Nicholas Logan, Euphoria’s Olivia Grace Applegate, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Michael Abbott Jr., Ozark’s Jessica Frances Dukes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Clé Bennett, True Blood’s Sam Trammell, and The Mosquito Coast’s Alejandro Akara. Mather Zickel plays Pa Archer, a character whose commanding and compassionate presence helps his family survive the brutal Montana winter. The horror-western was directed by Michael Patrick Jann (Drop Dead Gorgeous) from a screenplay written by Meg Turner.

Though Organ Trail is a low-budget affair with a relatively unknown cast and creative team, the fact it puts a horror twist on a nostalgic property means it could easily punch above its weight. Organ Trail recently received an R rating for “strong violence, language, and some sexual references,” and now the surprise trailer has revealed more of what audiences can expect from the snowbound nightmare. The wait won’t be long for Organ Trail, as it releases in select theaters on April 14, followed by a digital release on May 12th.
