Zoe Saldaña Addresses James Gunn’s DC Superhero Role Comments

Jun 14, 2025

It’s hard to imagine creating a new superhero universe for DC Comics and not including any of the many, many, many, many actors who’ve already played in the Marvel sandbox. But that’s exactly what James Gunn is trying to do. After all, neither David Corenswet nor Rachel Brosnahan had been in a superhero movie until the upcoming Superman. That doesn’t mean, of course, that there won’t be exceptions to that rule, with people like Nicholas Hoult (who played Beast in several X-Men movies), his brother Sean Gunn (whom he casts in everything), or — if he has his way — his leading lady from Guardians of the Galaxy, Zoe Saldaña. In a new interview with Screenrant’s Ash Crossan, Saldaña was asked by the host about the teasing tidbit Gunn made in a comment on Threads (a.k.a. Instagram’s Twitter clone) about having a specific role in mind for the actress. Per the Screenrant story:
ScreenRant: James Gunn was saying he would love for you to be in the DCU, and he said he’s a character in mind for you. He said this on Threads. Have you guys had a real conversation about that happening at this point?
Zoe Saldaña: No, but I can’t wait for Superman. I think we’re all sort of anticipating. He’s so talented, and I’m pretty sure that he’s going to bring a lot of heart, but also a lot of humor and levity, to this beautiful legacy of a story.

The DCU just got a little bit bigger.

It’s also not the first time he’s mentioned wanting to work with the actress, having stirred up a similar discussion on Threads back in 2024 — so his love for Saldaña is clearly strong. But is jumping into another superhero, comic book universe what the actress wants to do? And what do fans think this role could be? We’ve got some thoughts from folks in the know in the next section below!
Zoe Saldaña Is Open To Whatever Roles Come Her Way — Including More Supes

It would be easy to assume that Saldaña, after spending years putting on the green make-up of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, would be tired of the comic book grandiosity. But no! The actress told ComicBook.com last year that she has “sons that are obsessed with comic books right now, and superheroes, so for me to be a part of projects that they will get to watch for the next 10, 15 years of their whole lives. It’s a dream for me.” It’s sort of adorable and will probably forever be a very cool memory for her kids that their mother has already been in one of the best superhero franchises of all time. Of course, fans have lots of theories about who she could or should play, with names like Catwoman, Vixen, and even Zatanna being thrown about. But it seems as though one of the more overwhelming consensus characters is that of Renee Montoya, a recurring character in the Batman universe. Whomever she ends up becoming, though, we’re sure she’ll absolutely embody it and do a fantastic job. Source: Screenrant
