The Art of the Movie Book Review

Dec 27, 2023

(C) 2023 MARVEL
This 10th-anniversary hardcover re-release of Iron Man: The Art of the Movie is only the beginning of a 24-set Marvel Cinematic Universe saga being published as an art set so let’s dive in with the movie that crafted the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we know today.
This fully illustrated 208-page book is the perfect insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes in the very underappreciated departments.
Focusing on concept art, the props department and the visual FX department Iron Man: The Art of the Movie brings these unsung heroes to the fold who work tirelessly to bring a concept to reality.
Packed full of behind-the-scenes shots, mock-ups and even concept to final prop design images this book shows an artistic evolution that isn’t explored or appreciated enough and paints it on every single page with vivid detail and coffee table pick-up appeal.

Jon Favreau (director of Iron Man) has a lovely dedication at the beginning of this book that reaches out and inspires future filmmakers when reading this particular book.
Special Effects artists at Stan Winston Studio, all of the award-winning concept illustrators, VFX designers and storyboard artists are asked to take centre stage whilst all of the main cast, directors, producers and the front-of-house team take a step back and allow these artists to shine.
Diving into the mechanical designs of each Iron Man suit is the content that dreams are made of and not only that they’re technically specific drawings meaning that even the most mechanically skilled readers out there have something to drool over as the intricacies of cinema’s most favourite superhero outfit is revealed.
With enough renders in this book, I can imagine this particular hardcover will have more than enough diagrams in for you to build your very own comic-con-ready Iron Man or Iron Monger suit in no time!

Whilst not solely focused on the gadgets and gizmos Tony Stark’s home is also explored along with his workshop and the book commentary effortlessly explains the scene, the thought process and the design process so effortlessly with an easy-to-understand wording of all major key components that went into each scene creation.
If I’m collecting any books they have to grab my attention from the off and this particular book has that in spades, once you’ve finished reading it’ll come into the passing conversation as you run to your bookshelf and show off the concepts to your friends or highlight a certain talking point from the film.
I love when a book has that evergreen usage rather than just a pick-me-up and never read me again sense of purpose as is the case with many books nowadays.
Art is forever an appreciated art form and film art and concept especially is of great interest to me as you can’t quite believe just how much goes into making your favourite movie until you dig deeper under the surface.

The first of many, many books that will deep dive into the individual slates of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and provide insight to the most curious nerdy superhero mind.
