Russell Crowe’s New Action Movie Can’t Break His Poor Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Feb 17, 2024

Summary

Russell Crowe’s new action movie,
Land of Bad
, continues his streak of poor Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

Land of Bad
has so far received a 52% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 24 reviews.
This marks the fifth consecutive movie for Crowe to be certified less-than-fresh by the review aggregator.

Russell Crowe’s new action movie Land of Bad can’t break the star’s recent streak of poor Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Co-starring Liam and Luke Hemsworth, Crowe’s latest action effort concerns a special ops mission in the Philippines that goes wrong, leading to a harrowing fight for survival. Crowe plays Reaper, a drone pilot who must guide a group of outnumbered and stranded soldiers back to safety.

Despite the Land of Bad cast including big names like Crowe and two of the Hemsworths, the action film has failed to impress critics, currently sitting at 52% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes on 24 reviews, becoming the fifth straight Crowe-starring film to be certified rotten by the review aggregator.

How Land of Bad’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Compares To Other Recent Crowe Films

Crowe’s Rotten Tomatoes resume includes plenty of certified fresh films, like L.A. Confidential (99%), The Insider (96%), The Nice Guys (91%), 3:10 to Yuma (89%) and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (85%), just to name a few. Crowe’s run of luck on the aggregator appears to have run out, however, as his last certified fresh film as a lead came way back in 2019 with True History of the Kelly Gang (80%).

Crowe’s recent five-movie certified rotten run began with 2022’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever (43%), then continued with 2022’s Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher (20%), 2022’s Poker Face (9%) and 2023’s The Pope’s Exorcist (50%). It’s worth noting that The Pope’s Exorcist boasts an RT audience score of 81%, while The Greatest Beer Run Ever was rated 91% by audiences.

Russell Crowe’s Recent Rotten Tomatoes Ratings Movie/Year Audience Score Critics’ Score Land of Bad (2024) NA 52% The Pope’s Exorcist (2023) 81% 50% Poker Face (2022) 35% 9% Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher (2022) 45% 20% The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022) 91% 43%

Though Land of Bad does represent something of an uptick for Crowe’s RT performance, 52% is still a far cry from the heights of L.A. Confidential, The Insider, The Nice Guys and other Crowe classics. If Crowe wishes to re-establish himself as an acclaimed star, he will need to pick better vehicles than the mediocre films he’s been content to appear in over the last few years.
