Despite quickly greenlighting the sequel, Saw 11’s release date has been delayed. The next installment in the long-running horror franchise was announced just three months after Saw X became the best-reviewed movie in the series and a strong box office hit, grossing over $111.8 million against its $13 million budget. It was further confirmed that the sequel would see Kevin Greutert return to the director’s chair for his fourth time in the franchise, having previously directed the sixth, seventh and tenth installments and editing all except the ones he directed and the Chris Rock-led Spiral.

Deadline has brought word that Lionsgate is officially pushing Saw 11’s release date back by one year. The horror sequel is now moving from September 27 to September 26, 2025. The news comes ahead of the studio’s panel at CinemaCon, as well as paired with the reveals that the upcoming Bill Skarsgård-led Crow reboot release date is being pushed back from its early summer date of June 7 to August 23, as well as the Halle Berry-led Never Let Go moving to Saw 11’s now-free release date.

Saw 11’s Release Date Is A Disappointment For 1 Reason

The initial quick turnaround between Saw 10 and 11 was something of reasonable concern considering the original sequels generally came out a year after each other and mostly saw poor reviews. Without extra time to assess what worked and what didn’t about the best-reviewed installment to date, it could’ve risked undermining the positive steps forward the franchise had begun taking. More than just an effective story, the shorter time also could’ve proven a challenge for creating new horrific traps for audiences to squirm over watching.

Despite the benefits of the new date, there is one disappointing aspect about Saw 11’s delay in that it will be missing a major anniversary milestone. In its original September 2024 release date, the movie would’ve had the opportunity to stay in theaters long enough to celebrate the original James Wan movie’s 20th anniversary. Though it’s unlikely this would’ve resulted in any special multi-movie screenings from Lionsgate, it nonetheless could’ve proven a fun ode to the fans who have stuck with the franchise thus far.

Many other blockbuster franchises have taken the opportunity to celebrate major milestones by releasing movies in time for certain anniversaries, including Avengers: Endgame celebrating a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, and 2018’s Halloween marking the original’s 40th anniversary. These releases didn’t necessarily add to their box office figures any more than the already devoted fanbases they held at the time, but still proved a nice novelty for their arrivals. Even if it won’t come in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary, the longer wait for Saw 11 will hopefully prove to live up to the critical heights of its predecessor.
