Joseph Quinn Says The Fantastic Four Is ‘Very Different’ from the MCU

Apr 24, 2024

Summary

Joseph Quinn believes the
Fantastic Four
reboot can rejuvenate interest in superhero movies by focusing on the people behind the characters and bringing real spectacle to theaters.
The film features a talented cast including Quinn, Julia Garner, Pedro Pascal, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach.
Fans are eager for upcoming MCU projects like
Deadpool & Wolverine, Blade
, and
Fantastic Four
to revitalize the future of the MCU.

Joseph Quinn, who plays the Human Torch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, believes the film can overcome ‘superhero fatigue.’ The project is one of the most anticipated MCU movies, and fans have been eager to see Marvel’s first family in the MCU since Iron Man brought the shared universe to life in 2008. The film has the uphill battle of dealing with the genre fatigue that has plagued superhero movies and shows over the last few years, but Quinn believes Fantastic Four is up to the task.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly to promote A Quiet Place: Day One, Quinn outlined the issues surrounding modern superhero films, and spoke about what Fantastic Four has done to separate itself from recent underwhelming MCU projects. “Superhero movies are movies about people. And if we’re invested in the people and the characters and the peril and the spectacle, then that’s why people go to the theaters to watch films. We’re not just in for a penny; we’re in for a pound with this one.” He added:

We’re going to go for it.

Quinn also had nothing but praise for the script, and the film’s director, Matt Shackman. “I think that with the story of the Fantastic Four, it feels like we want to get this right. There are aspects of it that are very different to other Marvel films. That felt very compelling to me. And again, going back to who’s involved, Matt [Shakman], of course, the director, I think is brilliant, and the cast, and I’ve read it and the script is brilliant. It’s really brilliant.”

Fans are hoping that upcoming MCU projects like Deadpool & Wolverine, Blade, and Fantastic Four can save the future of the MCU. Recent entries like Ms. Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were slated by critics and fans, with Quantumania holding the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any MCU film (sitting at an abysmal 46%).

The Fantastic Four Reboot Has an Amazing Cast

Of all the Marvel Comics characters not yet in the MCU, the Fantastic Four has probably had the most fiercely debated fan casting. John Krasinski was the hot favorite after his cameo as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but that has been confirmed as a one-time thing. While the casting didn’t quite match fans’ predictions, few have argued against Marvel Studios’ decision.

Related The Comic Origins of the MCU’s New Silver Surfer, Explained Marvel Studios shocked fans with the report that Julia Garner will play the Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four. Here is everything you need to know.

Alongside Joseph Quinn, the Fantastic Four reboot stars Pedro Pascal (as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (as Susan Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bacharach (as Ben Grimm/Thing). Quinn also complemented his cast mates during the interview, saying, “Working with Vanessa, Pedro, Evan — they’re really consummate pros and brilliant in everything they’re in. So I’m really looking forward to establishing this familial dynamic with them.”

Opposing Marvel’s first family is the Silver Surfer. Unlike the version seen in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the MCU’s Fantastic Four will feature the Shalla-Bal version of the character. Ozark star, Julia Garner, will be portraying the iconic Marvel character in the reboot. However, the Silver Surfer will not be the film’s main villain. New reports claim that Galactus will be the main villain, potentially played by Javier Bardem.

Fantastic Four
is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
