Superman
with Corenswet as lead, set to hit theaters in 2025, featuring a star-studded cast.

After many months of patient waiting, we have finally had our first look at David Corenswet as the DCU’s Superman. And the reaction has been a little mixed. Writer, director, and DCU head James Gunn shared the first image of Corenswet as Superman yesterday, with the image showing the actor in the process of suiting up while Metropolis is under attack. Combining classic details such as the spit curl and the red trunks with more modern additions like a collar and lines and markings on his arms, it’s clear that the suit is not exactly what anyone was expecting.

We begin with the positives, with one Superman fan taking to social media to say, “This image just screams both “A James Gunn Film” and “Superman’s just a guy”…..And I love that,” while another adds, “I do love how there’s been so much comparison with Superman as a messiah figure and we just get a photo of him in an apartment pulling his boots up like a normal dude. It’s pretty amazing.”

Others have been looking at the image for clues, with some wondering whether this will be a homemade suit as often appears in the comics while others have already created their own artwork in the hopes of showing off the suit in all its glory…

However, while there has been a lot of positivity about the new suit, many of the reactions have been pretty mixed. Many have questioned not just the suit itself, but the image used to make the first reveal. “This is legit a bad first look. The movie can be great! David can be great, Gunn can direct the [sh*t] out of this movie! But this will always be a terrible, thoughtless, first look at such an iconic character,” says one disappointed fan.

As was always expected, some continue to call for the return of Henry Cavill’s iteration of the character. Introduced as part of the SnyderVerse, the end of Cavill’s tenure was rife with controversy after he was brought back for a post credits scene appearance at the end of Black Adam before being let go from the role in favor of the DCU reboot.

Further reactions question the “extra lines, creases, and bulkiness” of the new Superman suit, while others call for fans to be patient and wait to see more from the reboot, which is due to hit theaters in 2025. You can check out some more reactions to the recent reveal below.

Could David Corenswet’s Hard Work in the Gym Convince the Naysayers?
Superman (2025) Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”

Following the release of David Corenswet as Superman, the actor’s trainer has now taken to social media to share a peek at the gains the Pearl and The Politician star has made in order to play the iconic superhero in the DCU. And he certainly looks like a “Man of Steel.” Corenswet’s trainer Paolo Mascitti shared an image of the actor flexing after a workout alongside the caption, “@davidcorenswet worked his ass off , I can’t wait to share more of the training we did to prepare to play this iconic character, stay tuned for more.”
