Warner Bros. has recently shared a new synopsis for its animated series, Creature Commandos, prior to the upcoming Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The series will be a part of the company’s presentation at the event. According to the synopsis shared by DC Film News on X, the series will spotlight Amanda Waller, the formidable character known for assembling groups of unlikely heroes for perilous missions.
“From Executive Producer and writer James Gunn, Creature Commandos… follows Amanda Waller as she forms a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners.”
In Creature Commandos, Waller ingeniously constructs a black ops team composed of monstrous prisoners. This concept echoes the dynamic of Task Force X or the Suicide Squad, also managed by Waller under the oversight of A.R.G.U.S. The origins of Creature Commandos trace back to the 1980’s “Weird War Tales #93,” where the team first appeared under the creative helm of J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick. The show is one of the initial ventures announced by James Gunn in his ambitious January 2023 unveiling of the revamped DC Universe (DCU).

The series boasts an impressive voice cast that brings together a diverse group of characters. Frank Grillo lends his voice to Rick Flag Sr., with Viola Davis returning as the steely Amanda Waller. Additional talent includes Sean Gunn voicing both G.I. Robot and Weasel, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, and Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic. The ensemble is rounded out by Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, Anya Chalotra, and Steve Agee, who contribute to other pivotal roles such as the Bride of Frankenstein, Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Circe, and John Economos, respectively.
James Gunn recently announced a significant milestone for the animated series Creature Commandos. As of April 2024, the series has completed all animatics and voice recordings, with the team eagerly awaiting the first animated cuts. This update suggests that the production is on the cusp of final stages, promising fans an exciting glimpse into its progress soon.

Creature Commandos Transition from Animation to Big Screen Debut
DC Studios
During the much-anticipated Annecy International Animation Film Festival, attendees will get a special preview of Creature Commandos. Gunn’s announcement coincides with plans for a presentation at the festival, where supervising producer Rick Morales and director Balak Yves will guide the audience through the intricate artistry and creative processes that have shaped the series.
DC Universe’s move toward an integrated strategy led to characters from Creature Commandos crossing over from animation to live-action, retaining the same actors across both formats. Recently, it was confirmed that Alan Tudyk’s character, Dr. Phosphorus, will make his live-action debut. The news broke when Tom King, a key figure in the DCU writer’s room, revealed a conversation with the character’s original creator, Walt Simonson. According to King, Simonson was informed about Dr. Phosphorus’ upcoming role in a feature film.
Similarly, Frank Grillo is set to continue his role as Rick Flag Sr. in the live-action realm. He will appear in the upcoming second season of Peacemaker, starring alongside John Cena, who returns as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker.
