Hemsworth takes blame for his own MCU failure with
Thor: Love and Thunder
.
Thor star Chris Hemsworth has criticized some of his fellow Marvel actors, saying he gets annoyed when they star in an MCU outing and then “bash them” afterwards. Speaking with The Times, Hemsworth, who has starred as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, disapproves of the actors who want to join the hugely successful franchise when it’s on a high…but then denounces the world of Marvel when things don’t go their way.
“It’s, like, ‘They’re films that are successful, put me in one! Oh, mine didn’t work? I’ll bash them.’ Look, I grew up on a soap opera. And it used to bother me when actors would later talk about the show with guilt or shame. Humility goes a long way.”
Hemsworth has been commenting a lot on his long-running time in the Marvel universe lately, with the actor recently shouldering the blame for one of his own MCU failures, 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. While the movie garnered a solid box office, reviews were decidedly mixed, and Hemsworth blames himself.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”
Chris Hemsworth Is Bothered by Major Filmmakers Criticizing the MCU
Not only has Hemsworth taken aim at those actors who decide to feature in the MCU before taking it to task, the actor has also commented on the criticisms leveled at the franchise by filmmaking greats such as Martin Scorsese.
“It felt harsh, and it bothers me, especially from [my] heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space. Those guys had films that didn’t work too, we all have. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool. Tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?”

Hemsworth has stepped away from the role of Thor for a while (with the character expected to feature as part of Avengers 5 in 2026) and is now working with one of those filmmaking greats, George Miller, in this month’s Mad Max spinoff Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And it’s very possible that the pair could reunite for a fifth Thor outing, with Miller having stated that he would work with Hemsworth “on anything.”
“I would work with Chris on anything. I really would. He’s a wonderful actor. He’s got the full range of all the skills. I mean, you’ve got to be athletic, physically. But, you also gotta be athletic emotionally and intellectually to take on these very, ultimately fairly complex, any role really. So, I was very lucky with all my cast and particularly in the way that Anya and Chris matched each other. Particularly towards the end of the month.”
Directed by George Miller, who co-wrote it with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne as the titular character, with the movie taking place many years before 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and following Imperator Furiosa as she fights to survive The Wasteland.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
is due to land in theaters on May 24, 2024.
