Summary

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
passes $302 million at the global box office.
Director Wes Ball’s new
Planet of the Apes
movie has been met with positive reviews and will likely end up being a modest commercial success.
The movie’s reception makes an additional installment in the franchise likely.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes passes a major box office milestone following its release at the beginning of May. Wes Ball directs the latest installment in the long-running Planet of the Apes franchise, which follows Noa (Owen Teague) as he teams up with Mae (Freya Allan), a human, for an epic adventure. The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes reviews were generally quite positive, and the film has also evidently been striking a chord with audiences.

Now, Collider reports that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has passed $302 million at the worldwide box office. This figure comprises $129 million domestic and $172 million from international markets. The movie is reported to have a budget of $160 million.

Kingdom of the Planet Of The Apes’ Box Office Is A Good Sign For The Franchise
Will Another Movie Happen?

The three previous Planet of the Apes movies, which follow the rise of Andy Serkis’ Caesar, was remarkably well-received. The latter two films, especially, which were directed by Matt Reeves, tapped into a dark and gritty tone that clearly resonated with audiences. 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the franchise’s highest-grossing film, ended its theatrical run with a whopping $710.6 million worldwide.

War for the Planet of the Apes didn’t quite reach these same highs, but was still a major success at $490.7 million. Considering the performance of Ball’s film thus far, it won’t be reaching this number, but it can still be considered a modest success given the state of the box office in 2024. To break even (not including marketing costs), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes likely needs to earn about $320 million. The film will probably end up being profitable by the time all is said and done, and this bodes well for the future.

As of this writing,
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
sports a respectable 80% on
Rotten Tomatoes
.

The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ending clearly sets up a sequel, and it’s now looking likely that another film will end up getting the green light. With this kind of more modest box office success, however, a studio would perhaps be looking to making another film at a slightly reduced budget, but it’s not clear if this is possible for this franchise given its effects-heavy nature. In any case, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ performance suggests that audience interest in the franchise still remains.
