Director aims to break molds with unique MCU movie, hoping to surprise audiences.

Ryan Reynolds has likened the first Deadpool movie with what was intended as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine swansong, Logan, with the actor declaring the latter “the greatest comic-book adaptation ever made.” Speaking with Total Film, Reynolds explained how Deadpool and Wolverine have always had a connection, a connection that will come to the forefront in this year’s MCU outing Deadpool & Wolverine, with both characters having led very different comic book movies.

“The movies were quite congruent with each other at that point. Deadpool was different, and then right after Logan was potentially the greatest comic-book adaptation ever made.”

Many Marvel fans hold 2017’s Logan in the same high esteem as Ryan Reynolds and have some concerns that Deadpool & Wolverine will undo the pitch perfect ending given to the character. It has since been confirmed that this is not the case, with Jackman explaining why, despite thinking he “was done,” he decided to return to the fray.

“I was on my way – I was just driving – and literally just like a bolt of lightning came this knowing, deep in my gut, that I wanted to do this film with Ryan… for Deadpool and Wolverine to come together. And Jacqueline, I swear to you, when I said I was done I really thought I was done. But, in the back of my head, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I was like ‘Those two characters together…’ I knew it: I knew the fans wanted it. Ever since I put on the claws fans have talked about these two, so that had always been there, but I just knew.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is the only MCU movie being released in theaters this year, and it comes amid a serious downturn in the response from audiences to the long-running franchise. But director Shawn Levy is not worried and hopes that the Deadpool sequel will once again bring something different to the world of Marvel and “break molds.” He said to Total Film…

“We had no idea it would be this unique moment where people are asking what the MCU means any more. Can it surprise us? Can it break molds in ways that we don’t expect? We certainly hope that this movie is an answer to those questions.”

Directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay he wrote alongside Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, Deadpool & Wolverine is currently on track for a record-breaking opening weekend. So, while we will have to wait and see whether the sequel will revive the franchise critically, it certainly looks like it will do so financially.

Starring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, alongside Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen, Deadpool & Wolverine will see the character join the MCU after being tasked by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) with a new mission. A mission that will see him travel across the madness of the multiverse.

Deadpool & Wolverine
is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
