Before The Boys became the hit Prime Video series audiences (mostly) love today, Sony attempted to make a movie trilogy with director Adam McKay at the helm. The Boys, based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, is currently running its fourth season on Prime Video, which sees Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and the titular team continue their fight against Vought and the supes, led by Homelander (Anthony Star).

Rolling Stone recently revealed that Sony attempted to turn The Boys into a movie trilogy over a decade before the acclaimed series was released on Prime Video. Seth Rogan (a producer on The Boys), was one of the first to convince Sony to purchase the rights to the property in 2008, having been a fan of the comics since they were first released in 2006. Rogan, and his producing partner Evan Goldberg, approached Sony, saying “‘You guys should make this.’” Sony listened to the pair, but wanted to take the franchise in a different direction. Goldberg recalled:

“And they were like, ‘We should … with someone else.'”

Sony approached numerous directors to helm a potential The Boys movie. One iteration involved Adam McKay (Step Brothers,The Big Short) attempting to turn the comics into a movie trilogy. According to the report, McKay got so far as finishing a script for the first film, and creating some demo animatics for scenes. However, 2008 was a very different time for the superhero genre, and studios were skeptical about throwing millions of dollars at a comic book IP. The Boys co-creator, Darick Robertson, explained:

“I wouldn’t change how it worked out because the show is amazing. But he was doing really cool stuff. It just came down to it being 2008, not 2018. I just don’t think they were ready for it yet.”

The Boys Season 4 is Being Review Bombed

The Boys Season 4 is currently four episodes into its 8 episode run on Prime Video, and it’s been a shaky road so far when it comes to reviews. When Season 4 premiered (dropping the first three episodes at once), the show was met with a mixed critical reception. The series was still well-reviewed, but the Rotten Tomatoes score was the lowest in the show’s history.

The critics’ score has since gone up to a strong 95%. However, the audience score has plummeted following the release of the fourth episode. Season 4 currently sits at a divided 51%, with disgruntled fans “review bombing” the new season for its shift in approach to political satire – and some complaining that the show has gone ‘woke’.The Boys recently took a jab at fans complaining about Season 4. In a new featurette released on the Vought International YouTube channel, a fake promo for a Vought run internet browser lets fans know it’s fast and secure enough to keep them protected whilst they “review bomb TV shows.”

The Boys
Season 4 is releasing weekly on Prime Video.
