Jurassic Park
is the perfect summer blockbuster due to its high-concept story, groundbreaking visuals, and its sense of fun.
Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park has been named the best summer blockbuster ever. Released in June 1993, Jurassic Park marked Spielberg’s follow-up to the divisive Hook in 1991. The film, which was a critical and commercial success, chronicles an ill-fated visit to a dinosaur theme park, with a cast that includes Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough.
Now, Fandango shares on X, formerly Twitter, that Jurassic Park has been named the best summer blockbuster of all time, according to a new, 2,000-person survey.
While 2,000 people isn’t the largest of sample sizes, the results of the survey certainly speak to Jurassic Park’s enduring legacy. The Spielberg flick beats out the likes of Avengers: Endgame, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Star Wars: A New Hope. Check out Fandango’s full top 10 below:
Rank Movie 1 Jurassic Park (1993) 2 Avengers: Endgame (2019) 3 Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) 4 Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) 5 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 6 The Dark Knight (2008) 7 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) 8 Avengers: Infinity War (2018) 9 The Avengers (2012) 10 Independence Day (1996)
Jurassic Park Is The Perfect Summer Blockbuster
Why The Steven Spielberg Movie Is Such A Classic
After delivering another summer blockbuster with 1975’s Jaws, which is also arguably deserving of a place on the list above, Spielberg perfected the formula with Jurassic Park. The movie features a high concept that is easily conveyed in one sentence, and it promised a movie-going experience that was unlike anything audiences had seen before. Thankfully, though, Jurassic Park was able to live up to the premise and the hype thanks to Spielberg’s groundbreaking filmmaking.
While the Jurassic Park cast is certainly one reason for the movie’s success, it’s really the dinosaurs who are the stars of the show. Even by today’s standards, the film’s dinosaurs look incredible, and Spielberg makes sure to frame them in a way that makes them at once majestic, ginormous, and terrifying. Using a combination of practical effects and very early CGI, Jurassic Park’s dinosaurs cement the film as one of the most innovative and groundbreaking movies ever made.

While the T-Rex and the velociraptors are certainly portrayed in a way that strikes fear into viewers, Jurassic Park, crucially, never loses its sense of fun. This sense of fun and adventure is key to any summer blockbuster, and the 1993 Spielberg film strikes the perfect balance between this lightness and real tension. The Fandango survey above is proof that, even 31 years later, Jurassic Park remains an undeniable classic.
