What If…? Season 3 Gets Exciting Update as Marvel Teases the End for The Watcher
Jul 11, 2024
Summary
Season 3 of
What If…?
may be the last, completing a trilogy and exploring the Multiverse further.
Unexpected characters, possibly from X-Men and Fantastic Four, may join the series.
The Watcher’s story will reach a fulfilling conclusion, potentially making future seasons challenging.
The third season of Marvel’s What If…?is potentially slated to be its last, but according to a Marvel Studios executive, it will feel like the completion of a trilogy. This season could also potentially tie into upcoming Marvel projects. There are also promises of exploring the Multiverse beyond what the first and second seasons of the Disney+ series explored. While a trailer for the third season was released back in January, there is no set release date for the next stage in the animated MCU outing.
On The Official Marvel Podcast, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, proclaimed that season 3 of What If…? feels like the true culmination of a trilogy. Winderbaum further made it seem as though season 3 would really be the last for What If…? but not without teasing fans that unexpected characters would be potentially pulled into the universe and that there would be a strong conclusion for Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher. Check out his full comments below:
“Feels like the completion of a trilogy. It goes beyond the first two seasons in its exploration of the multiverse, and it pulls in characters that are very unexpected, and has what I think is an extremely moving and fulfilling culmination for the Watcher.”
New Additions to the MCU Could Provide Hints About New Characters Coming to What If…?
With the tease from Brad Winderbaum of how this next season “pulls in characters that are very unexpected,” it’s possible that new characters from the X-Men, thanks to their inclusion in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie and the X-Men ’97 animated series on Disney+, could be featured. Also, The Fantastic Four are soon making their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a movie due to be released in 2025, and it is possible that Reed Richards and the company could make their way into the fascinating multiverse of hypothetical stories as well.
Winderbaum does make it clear that, one way or another, Watcher’s story reaches its end, and with no guide through the multiverse, it could be challenging to continue the series beyond the third season.
Related What If…? Season 3 Sneak Peek Sends Red Guardian and the Winter Soldier on a Road Trip The first teaser for What If…? season three has now been released, with Red Guardian and the Winter Soldier becoming an unlikely duo.
The MCU has many more stories that it intends to tell through television, with the upcoming WandaVision spin-off Agatha All Along as well as an upcoming series dedicated specifically to Vision. The franchise also has films scheduled through May of 2027 with Avengers: Secret Wars and What If…? could potentially set the stage for more to come in the MCU. But right now, fans have to continue to wait for the next set of stories told by The Watcher.
We do know that one of the stories in season 3 of What If…?will be centered around the Red Guardian, with the episode also set to feature Bucky Barnes, who was originally slated to be featured in the second season of the show before changes were made.
