Ingrid Andress Apologizes for National Anthem Performance

Jul 17, 2024

Ingrid Andress has addressed her controversial performance of the national anthem at the Home Run Derby.

In a statement shared on social media, Andress wrote, “I’m not gonna bullshit y’all, I was drunk last night. I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need.”

She then apologized for her performance, sharing, “That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition. I’ll let y’all know how rehab is I hear it’s super fun.”

Her post was met with plenty of support from fans.

The four-time Grammy-nominated country singer was criticized for her off-key rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” on Monday. In a video shared from the annual Arlington, Texas home-run hitting competition, Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm was seen trying to stifle a laugh. The crowd also audibly jeered when Andress struggled to hit the high notes. The performance has since gone viral, with many comparing her version of the national anthem to Fergie’s equally controversial one from the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

While Andress may not be a household name, she’s no rookie in the music industry. The country singer is a four-time Grammy nominee who notably competed in the best new artist category in 2021, against now-renowned names like Phoebe Bridgers and Doja Cat; she ultimately lost to Megan Thee Stallion. Andress has had two singles reach the Billboard Hot 100: “More Hearts Than Mine” and “Wishful Drinking.” She also co-wrote Charli XCX’s hit song “Boys” and Bebe Rexha’s “Girl in the Mirror.”
