Why Kingsman 3 Is Taking So Long Explained By Matthew Vaughn
Jul 22, 2024
Summary
Matthew Vaughn reveals that
Kingsman 3
won’t begin production until next year due to Taron Egerton’s busy schedule.
The film likely won’t release until 2026.
The upcoming
Kingsman
movie will serve as the conclusion to Harry and Eggsy’s story, following the pair as they team up for one last adventure.
Kingsman 3 director Matthew Vaughn addresses why the trilogy-capper is taking such a long time. The Kingsman franchise was originally developed as a series of comic books set in the world created by Mark Millar. Millar and David Gibbons published the initial comics through Marvel in 2012, following the world of spies in the United Kingdom. The comics were then adapted for the first movie in 2014. Plans for sequels, spinoffs, and a television series have been in development over the years.
After the success of the first film in 2014, Vaughn continued the story of Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Harry (Colin Firth) in Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 2017. A third film was planned with the working title of Kingsman: The Blue Blood, but Vaughn’s next installment in the franchise was 2021’s The King’s Man, a prequel. Although Eggsy’s third and final outing seemingly sat on the back burner for a number of years, Vaughn did recently confirm that the film’s script is now well underway.
Kingsman 3 Is Taking Long Because The Star & Director Are Busy
Egerton And Vaughn Have Both Had Numerous Movies The Last Few Years
Now, with still no Kingsman 3 release date in sight, Vaughn explains in a recent interview with Collider that the film is taking so long to get off the ground because Egerton has got quite a busy schedule at the moment. Unfortunately, that means the movie won’t be starting production this year as he previously suggested. Check out Vaughn’s full comment below:
“That’ll be the next year, because Taron’s bloody busy. He’s doing another movie, the guy that did
Blackbird
, they’re doing another big TV show. So I have to wait for his availability as well.”
The TV show Vaughn references in his response is Firebug. Egerton will appear in the series alongside Jurnee Smollett. The eight-episode series will follow a detective and arson investigator as they track a pair of serial arsonists. That’s not the only project Egerton has had since the initial plan for Kingsman 3.
The third chapter in the franchise was originally slated for filming in 2019, and then delayed again until 2022 before being delayed again to 2025 now. In that time, Egerton has filmed several other projects, including the series Blackbird as well as the Elton John biopic Rocketman. He’s also lent his voice to several projects, like Sing 2 and The Sandman podcast. He also appeared in the AppleTV+ movie Tetris, so Egerton kept himself busy during the delays.
Likewise, Vaughn hasn’t been idle. He’s worked on scripts for other Kingsman projects and got the prequel movie to the screen. Vaughn was also a producer on Rocketman and Tetris, which Egerton starred in, and on Argyle. Vaughn also directed Argyle, which was eventually revealed to be set in the Kingsman universe.
While it’s not clear which cast members will return for Kingsman 3, it’s likely their schedules have been taken into account as well. Colin Firth is expected to appear as Harry Hart again, and he has also kept himself busy following the second movie. He’s appeared in Mamma Mia Here We Go Again, Mary Poppins Returns, 1917, and the series The Staircase, just to name a few of his high-profile projects. Firth is also attached to Young Sherlock, a new Sherlock Holmes series.
Before Kingsman 3 can be scheduled to film, the cast will all have to have availability that lines up.

What To Expect From Kingsman 3
When Could The Final Kingsman Movie Release?
Kingsman 3 is expected to serve as the conclusion to Eggsy and Harry’s story. Little has been revealed so far regarding the film’s story, but Vaughn has teased that it will follow Eggsy as he struggles to regain his purpose while teaming up with Harry for one final adventure. It’s not clear whether the Kingsman 3 cast will include any other familiar faces.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
is currently available to stream on MGM+, while its sequel is available to rent on various streaming platforms.
It’s likely that the upcoming third film will continue several franchise traditions. The film, for example, will likely be rated R and will likely sport a lighter tone. Previous installments in the Kingsman franchise have all featured healthy amounts of comedy along with sometimes fairly graphic violence, something that the trilogy-capper will surely be doing once more. The new movie will probably also feature an over-the-top, Bond-villain-esque antagonist with an elaborate plan, just like Samuel L. Jackson’s Valentine and Julianne Moore’s Poppy.
In addition to
Kingsman 3
, Vaughn has previously shared plans for a sequel to
The King’s Man
, though it’s not clear how far along this project is.
As far as a potential release date, Vaughn’s reveal that Kingsman 3 won’t begin shooting until next year would suggest that it could hit theaters in 2026. This means, when the film comes out, it will have been at least 9 years since audiences last saw Eggsy and Harry, though it’s unclear if this same amount of time will have passed in-universe. While Kingsman 3 is definitely still on track, it does unfortunately sound like it won’t be coming anytime soon.
