A Simple Favor 2’s “Bananas” Script Teased By Returning Star

Jul 23, 2024

Summary

A Simple Favor 2’s
script is teased to be wilder than the original, featuring more twists and turns.
Henry Golding notes that the script features twists for more than just Emily.
The upcoming sequel will be set in Italy.

The “bananas” script for A Simple Favor 2 is teased by returning star Henry Golding. In A Simple Favor, directed by Paul Feig and based on Darcey Bell’s 2017 novel, Golding portrayed Sean Townsend, the husband of Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) who became a suspect in her disappearance. Along with Golding and Lively, the cast included Anna Kendrick as Stephanie Smothers, a single mother who befriended Sean and learns that Emily had staged her own death. A Simple Favor 2 was confirmed in 2022, four years after the original release.

In an interview with Variety, Golding revealed that A Simple Favor 2 will be wilder than its predecessor. Teasing the film’s script, he noted: “The craziness has just blown up.” Golding added that Feig is in the process of editing and also touched on the positive reception towards A Simple Favor. Read Golding’s comments below:

It’s crazy. The script is so much more bananas. It’s not just Blake’s character. The craziness has just blown up. Paul is in the edit room as we speak. Every so often he’ll send me a text and be like, ‘This scene is so wild.’ Everyone thought it was going to be a one-off. But then people loved it and there was such fanfare. It’s one of those guilty pleasures.

How A Simple Favor 2 Can Build Off First Movie
Emily, Stephanie, & Sean May Reunite

Golding’s comments about the script suggest that A Simple Favor 2 may contain more twists and turns. When it comes to the character of Sean, he and Emily had a complicated relationship. Following his wife’s apparent death, Sean became intimate with Stephanie, something he was goaded about. When Emily confronted him in person, she revealed that he could be framed for everything that happened. By the end of A Simple Favor, Emily is arrested andSean becomes a bestselling author, so it will be interesting to see how he factors into the sequel.

Not much is known about the movie, but set photos have revealed that Emily will be remarrying in Italy and, because there are returning cast members from A Simple Favor, there will be more connections to the original. It’s hard to imagine scenarios more outlandish than those in A Simple Favor, including Stephanie discovering that Lively’s character had killed her father and twin sister, or characters more conniving than Emily. However, Stephanie and Emily being together could lead to bizarre events, especially if feelings of animosity reside. The location change should also be a highlight for the upcoming sequel.

Other cast members returning for
A Simple Favor 2
are Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, and Ian Ho, who portrayed the son of Emily and Sean.

Other ways A Simple Favor 2 can build off the 2018 film, and potentially outdo it, are by featuring a bigger mystery and antagonist, since it doesn’t seem like Emily will fill that role, at least early on. Considering what occurred in the original, and based on Golding’s comments, it will be interesting to see just how wild A Simple Favor 2 gets when it premieres.
