Joe & Anthony Russo’s Marvel Return Has Fans Divided
Jul 23, 2024
The MCU seemed to be heading back in the right direction — Deadpool & Wolverine are about to bring the X-Men into the fray, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is returning to the small screen, and the Russo Brothers are rejoining Marvel Studios — but fans aren’t too happy about that last point. Joe and Anthony Russo began their Marvel tenure with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a cold-war-inspired spy thriller starring Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier and Chris Evans as Captain America, a.k.a. “America’s ass” (he’s never escaping that joke). The pair then directed Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, with the latter at one point becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.
News dropped earlier this week that Joe and Antony Russo are in early talks to return to the MCU to direct Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. It would have been safe to assume that fans would be ecstatic about the Russos returning. The MCU has been in a rut post-Endgame, and the two directors responsible for some of the franchise’s biggest movies seem like a safe and surefire bet. However, fans aren’t reacting the way Marvel Studios execs probably expected.
Taking to X to voice their displeasure (the only thing people still use the platform for), fans have called out Marvel Studios for taking the safe route with the next two Avengers films. Various names have been attached to both projects during their tumultuous early developments, including Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy and Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. Fans were hoping new creative voices would oversee the respective projects, and believe that the Russos’ attachment is uninspired.
Check out a selection of unhappy reactions below:
Some Marvel Fans Think the Russo Brothers Can Save the MCU
It’s almost impossible to read (or write) a news story about the Marvel Cinematic Universe without the franchise’s recent failures being brought up. Without diving too far down that depressing rabbit hole, Marvel Studios needs an exciting movie to reinvigorate its cinematic universe. Some fans believe the Russos are the perfect people for the job.

While some fans are jumping to conclusions, others are optimistic that the Russos can deliver two more jaw-dropping Avengers movies in the future. The pair shouldn’t need to prove anything to the naysayers, as their Marvel Studios track record is almost flawless. Check out some less angry reactions below:
