At Capacity Featured, Reviews Film Threat

Jul 24, 2024

When you send someone else to do your dirty work… especially in love…the results can be surprising. In Spencer Jamison’s short film At Capacity, Ari (Jake Ryan Lozano) is sent to a local burger bar to break up with his cousin’s girlfriend, Maxine (Zainab Bari), on behalf of his cousin Andrew. In the middle of the breakup speech, “Maxine” reveals that she is really Mia (Spencer Jamison), Maxine’s Sister, who was also sent to this date to break up with Andrew.
Great love stories always start in the most bizarre…often ironic situation. Ari and Mia are sent on an indirect blind date with the intention of breaking up with someone else and potentially finding a connection instead.

“Ari and Mia are sent on an indirect blind date with the intention of breaking up with someone else…”
Writer/director/lead Spencer Jamison crafts a sweet, endearing love story, and what I like is that it’s between two very strong personalities portrayed beautifully by two strong leads. Both are on this “date” that, of its nature, is emotionally charged. The walls are up and Jamison takes her time to slowly break them down. To spice up the mix, they are not only there for this proxy breakup but in their professional lives, they are natural adversaries as well.
Writing a love story is not easy, and Jamison shows her chops not only in writing a romance but also in producing one both in front of and behind the camera. What she does so well is create two characters and have us fall in love with and root for them almost immediately. After that, we’re in for the ride.
