Forget ‘Lioness,’ Paramount’s 114-Episode Non-Stop Action Thriller Is One of the Biggest Shows on Streaming
Aug 3, 2026
Taylor Sheridan’s hit action thriller, Spec Ops: Lioness, is nearly back with its third season. Season 3 of Lioness debuts on Aug. 2, dropping a new episode each week. While Taylor Sheridan fans are re-watching the series (and Sheridan’s other major shows, like Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch) in preparation, another military action thriller is sneaking its way up the streaming charts. It debuted way before Lioness was even an idea trapped inside Taylor Sheridan’s cowboy hat, and nine years later, it has become the perfect Lioness successor, especially as it’s currently a global streaming hit. Created by Benjamin Cavell, CBS/Paramount+’s SEAL Team is currently one of the biggest shows on streaming, ahead of Lioness’s third season. The show debuted in 2017, running for seven seasons (with a total of 114 episodes), before concluding in 2024. As the name suggests, the series follows a unit of Navy SEALs, both during and out of deployment, as they face life-threatening missions, which take a toll on their psyches away from the battlefield. David Boreanaz leads the show as Jason Hayes, with a supporting cast that includes Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Toni Trucks, Justin Melnick, and Tyler Grey. SEAL Team hasn’t dropped a new episode in nearly two years, but the show has rebounded out of nowhere to become a global streaming hit. Lioness is currently the fourth most popular series on Paramount+ globally (and will likely jump to the number one spot after the new season drops). Scroll a little further down the list, and you’ll see SEAL Team, fighting strong in ninth place. Again, SEAL Team has been finished for two years. So, the only reasonable explanation is that Lioness fans have given the seven-season action thriller a go to get their military action fix before Lioness’ third season.
‘SEAL Team’ Is a Consistent, Seven-Season Action Hit
SEAL Team might not have the same level of quality, production design, or budget as Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness (it is a Taylor Sheridan series, after all), but it was a safe and reliable hit on CBS. Military action thrillers are almost always a success, unless they end up being dreadful. The series doesn’t have enough Rotten Tomatoes reviews to generate an overall score. But Season 1 earned a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score, with an 81% user rating.
‘SEAL Team’ Nearly Concluded With a Movie
CBS/Paramount+
The fan base was understandably upset when SEAL Team ended, but Season 7 was nearly the penultimate season for the show. Season 8 was never on the cards. But during Season 7’s production, the SEAL Team story was going to continue through a different medium. Season 7 would have ended on a cliffhanger, before wrapping up the entire series with a feature-length film. However, during Season 7’s production, that idea was scrapped completely.
